Minimalist Packing Guide
Minimalist Packing Guide for a 7-Day Vacation (Ethical, Low-Waste, and Sustainable)

Minimalist Packing List

Our family just came back from a magical 7-day vacation in Tuscany and we are already dying to go back. This was one of those holidays where everything just went right. A few days before we were to head out on a camping trip (also fun, of course), our friend called us to let us know that his apartment in Tuscany was available and that we could stay for free. Gasp. Are you serious?!

We had no idea what we were getting into when we hit the road. We had yet to see any photos of the place and neither of us know enough about Tuscany to have any clue as to where the house was. 5 hours later and we were (or so we thought) in the middle of nowhere and driving up a very rough road. It was so rough that I had to get out of the car and push rocks left and right so that our very low car would not get stuck on this extremely steep hill. The boys were ecstatic to see that a tractor was parked in the field and while we were singing along to the “tractor song” (thanks, Blippi), we saw about 200 gorgeous sheep being escorted by 3 magical dogs. I swear….it was straight out of a movie.

We pulled up to a huge shrub of greenery, a hand made football field, and a shed that looked like it had just been destroyed by a storm (turns out, the storm destroyed way more than that quite recently). To my right a saw a quaint little archway that was covered in purple flowers. The entrance to our home for the week.

We all unbuckled our seat belts and walked slowly towards the purple flowers. As we inched nearer, we saw what was the most magical scene: A traditional Tuscan home in the middle of a farm. No bells and whistles, no commercial property, no modern anything….just….a house that fairy tales are made in.

We walked around the entirety of the house: huge ceramic pots lined the entire property and were full of gorgeous flowers and plants. 3 little cats came to say hello, a bunny bounced by us, 4 massive lizards crawled over our heads, and a very spunky mixed itty-bitty dog came over to sniff us out. Turns out, this little dog lets the families know if the wolves are near. He came in handy on our last night!

The family who resides upstairs was not home but our apartment had a key just hanging there…right in the key holder. This made me smile…and laugh…and take a deep breath. Trust. You don’t see this much anymore.

I took one photo of the house….on our third night when I realised that I had yet to capture the home. Its not a perfect photo, but I love it. It just speaks for itself. No TV, no radio….nothing but our own singing, our own chatting, and lots of laughter. Each night we sat outside and played board games and card games. Each morning the boys ran outside to the garden and rode their bikes all over the farm and chased the kitties with their little “I FOUND YOU!!” screams. Each afternoon we headed to the sea and played in the sand for hours and hours on end. We hit the same gelato shop at siesta time for our mango and strawberry sorbet and shots of espresso. We piled up in the same bed at night and read the 2 same books over and over again until our littles ones drifted off to dream land. Tip toe and tip toe….we opened a bottle of wine and talked. Laughing at random sounds, running inside when the dog shouted “wolves”, and passing out each night in each others arms.

This was the perfect holiday.

Minimalist Packing: The Toiletries

  1. Pit Liquor Deodorant: Martin and I are obsessed with this entire company. This scent is whiskey vanilla which I love and Martin loves the coconut rum. They come in spray bottles and roller bottles. They are glass so be careful! (Use code WONDERMAMAS15 for a discount!)
  2. Jojoba oil: I pick up my jojoba oil from our local farmers market. I add 12 drops of frankincense and 12 drops of lavender essential oils to each bottle before using. This is my face cleanser and face moisturiser all in one!
  3. My bamboo toothbrush. I packed 4, of course, but for photo sake you just see one.
  4. This is my favorite hair brush (I own one hair brush and one comb from this company, Tek Hair brushes).
  5. Plaine Products Shampoo & Conditioner: I do not mess around with my hair anymore and shampoo/conditoner bars. My hair is way too wavy, course, and latin to mess around anymore haha. I nearly destroyed it with the bars. So, I found this amazing company that has a vegan, natural, refillable, and super wavy/curly hair friendly line that keeps my strands hydrated and happy. I would say it resembled the Aveda shampoo line that I was addicted to for years and years before making the switch! If you want to give them a go, you can use the discount code: WonderMamas20. P.s. they do have travel sized ones but with sand and sea water, I knew I had to bring the big ones haha.

  1. Bandana: This bandana is about 5 years old and I do believe it came from H&M. Probably the only thing that ever lasted this long from that store haha. I use this when I wash my face, when I need a hair band, when I need a head band, etc.
  2. Bandaids. Because….kids.
  3. Georganics crush and brush toothpaste tablets. All you do is pop one tablet in your mouth and begin brushing with a wet toothbrush. Bam – you are set.
  4. Eyelash curler and 100% pure lipstick: I use the lipstick as an impromptu blush as well. This is as far as I go with makeup in the Tuscan heat.
  5. Tweezers: You all know that I only wax (no razor comes near my body) and tweezers are great for holidays for random clean up jobs.
  6. Body wash and shampoo bar: This is all my kids and Martin need. We all share the body wash bar!
  7. Lavera SPF 50 sunscreen: This is made for babies but I love it. It works great and this company is all around amazing. Heads up though: this sunscreen is WHITE. We all look like casper the ghost when we wear it.
  8. Washable and reusable face wipes: These wipes come with this little bag. Once the wipes are dirty, toss in the bag. When the bag is full, simply toss into the wash and start over again. These work great for oil cleansing.
  9. This spray bottle is my homemade bug spray made with lemongrass eucalyptus oil, geranium oil, and cedar wood oil.
  10. The two roller bottles: One has a sleepy roller blend and the other is just a first aid cleaning alcohol that is super handy when the boys get a minor scrape. Just roll this over their cut/scrape and add the bandaid! Genius.
  11. Wash Cloth: This wash cloth is made of jungle vine and comes from A Million Elephants. Made in Laos, this company is one of my all-time favourites for eco friendly and long lasting products. I also packed along their jungle vine produce bag and wallet!
  12. Minimalist Packing: My Choice of Clothes

    1. White Linen Long Sleeve Button Up by Sundays Designs: I love this linen button up top because it can be worn on its own over a swim suit, tucked into shorts or tied as a cute crop with a Sarong or skirt. I wore this nearly every day on the trip to protect myself from the sun!
    2. Organic Basics Tencel Tank Top: This is one of my all time favorite tanks and I own it in three colors. This looks great with the Patagonia hiking shorts, the linen skirt, and just as is with the panties. It is softer than anything else in my closet!

    1. Linen Button Up Skirt by Sundays Designs: This link is no longer available but any button up skirt will do (or skip all together for a sarong). I wore this a few times for dinner and walking around the amazing Tuscany village.
    2. Encircled 8 Ways to Wear It Chrysalis Cardi: This is supposed to be able to be worn 8 times but I have found out how to wear it 10 ways! I love to use this as a strapless dress and a skirt (not shown on the site, but super easy to make it happen). This is a capsule wardrobe must have.
    3. 5. Athletic Shorts: Any will do. I actually never wore these but I still think they are a smart addition in case you want to work out or go for a bike ride! It was just too hot for any of that haha.

      6. Patagonia High Rise Wrinkle Free Shorts: These are my all time favorite shorts. I ordered these during a huge sale last year and I am just in love. They always look good, sit beautifully on my waist, and are extremely comfortable.

      7. Kindomshop Dress (This specific one is now gone but there are plenty of options here): I love every single dress from this shop. Just gorgeous and oh so sustainable.

      8. Tet Swimwear Jacqueline One Piece Reversible Swim Suit: One side is a beautiful striped color and the reverse is a very cool green. Love this swimsuit! I used this as a body suit as well and paired it with the patagonia shorts for walking around the town. Paired below with my favorite robe by Luks linen!

      luks linen robe

      9. Striped Bikini gifted from a friend (she ordered the wrong size): I love this swimsuit but low and behold, it only held up for about 5 swims before losing all its color and turning into crap (another big reason why we only shop from sustainable brands). I’ll still keep it but gosh….this just reminded me how much we all need to shop with better brands.

      10. Two sarongs: One short (very old from my closet) and one long from Nomads Clothing UK: I live in sarongs all year round. I wore both of these every single day and I usually sleep in the longer sarong by Nomads Clothing UK.

      11. Two Bralettes: One from Organic basics in tan and one from Hara the Label in green

      hara the label

      12. One Sports bra from Indigo Luna: The comfiest sports bra in the world in my opinion (I have tried hundreds in my life). Recommended by breast feeding moms everywhere!

      13. Four Panties from Organic Basics, Bhumi Organic and Hara the Label

      14. Two sets of earrings: From our local fair trade shop in town.

      15. Not shown: I also packed two of my Wuka period panties just in case my period came on holidays. Good thinking because it hit two days before we left! I love my period panties…they make periods comfortable.

      Minimalist Packing: The Bag

      pakt bags

We have had the pakt bag for well over a year now and it’s my go to for pretty much any adventure including this trip to Tuscany. They also have a very cool back pack that works just like a carry on suit case if you are more of a back pack person!

All of my clothes from above, rolled, and my toiletries fit perfectly into this bag. I also packed along my laptop, charger, documents, my book, and camera supplies. Everything fit beautifully and unpacking is always a breeze. Highly recommend this to anyone looking for a duffel/backpack suitcase option!

p.s. This works as a brilliant diaper bag as well. It fit all my cloth diapers and the gear needed for our 24 hour travel trip to the states. Just unbeatable.

      Simple, Effective, and Fun

5 DIY Zero Waste Swaps that you can make at home!

Welcome back to the blog, loves! It’s always an honour to have you here. Today I am going to share with you my top 5 DIY Zero Waste Swaps that I create in the comfort of my own home. These swaps have saved our family tons of money, they are super simple and effective, and can even be turned into gorgeous gifts for birthday/holiday season. Yay for Zero Waste and DIY!

This will definitely be the first of many DIY Zero Waste Blog Posts because there are just so many and I love them all. I will start with the 5 easiest ones that you can do immediately with items around the house. Keep a look out for links within this blog post as well – they will direct you to further information or even a direct link to a recommended product.

If you are new to the zero waste / low waste / minimalism lifestyle, I want to make one thing clear. Do NOT throw any of your used/abused/torn/ragged items out until you have checked in with the zero waste community first. There may be some amazing DIY crafts that you can do with these so-called “trash” items. Ragged old towels, stained/worn clothes, broken reusable bottles, old Tupperware, etc. The longer we can keep these out of the landfill, the better. So let’s get to crafting and creating!

DIY Zero Waste Swaps: Homemade Cleaning Solutions!

      5 DIY Zero Waste Swaps

I grew up hating the smell of vinegar. My father had a bottle that he loved to keep in the bathroom to wipe down the cabinets and bath tub every week or so. The smell would linger for days and it hurt my little nostrils. Later, when I was much older, I was hesitant to ever use vinegar as a cleaning solution.

That is until I found the infusion method. Here is how it works: Fill a large glass jar with a tight seal about 85% full (I love this size here) with white distilled vinegar. Peel 2 large lemons and toss the peels into the jar. Grab a handful of fresh rosemary and toss that in next. Feel free to add in extra citrus peels (orange/lime) and herbs (lavender is heavenly) and then tightly seal. Let sit in your pantry or a cool/dark place for 6 weeks.

Voila! You have infused your vinegar.

Take a spray bottle (I love these) and fill half way with the strained infused vinegar and half distilled water. If you wish, you can also add some 60-70% proof alcohol (like rubbing alcohol) as well for the disinfectant power. Shake and use as you would a general cleaner. I love to use the vinegar and water mixture for cleaning windows, the kitchen, floors, and the like.

If using alcohol, I add 1 part of each: 1 part alcohol, 1 part vinegar, and 1 part water. Many like to add 2 parts alcohol, 2 parts water, and 1 part vinegar or less. Do as you wish!

Keep the already infused vinegar in the pantry, sealed, until ready to refill your spray bottles again.

So, what about the baking soda? For any hard to clean surfaces, simply shake some baking soda over it and then spray the vinegar infusion. The combined power will cause bubbles and an epic cleaning machine!

Curious how to make your own white distilled vinegar? Check this post out here!

DIY Zero Waste Swaps: Homemade Hankies and Wipes

      Homemade Hankerchiefs

The options are really endless for this DIY swap. You can create your own hankies, cloth wipes, wet wipes, face wipes, and even toilet paper if you are up for it! All you need are those old raggedy clothes/towels that no longer serve their purpose.

For hankies: I love mine to be a nice long rectangle. It’s as easy and cutting the fabric into your shape! To avoid any fraying, you can easily sew the edges but I only do this for certain fabrics that are already on their very last leg. For the most part, just slicing and folding is all I need to do.

For cloth wipes/wet wipes: I love to use the babies old blankets/old clothes for these. Soft and perfect for wiping them clean! Simply slice into small squares and store into a reusable bag. If you want wet wipes, you can grab a mason jar and fill with water and a tsp of coconut oil. Add the small squares to the mason jar and use as you would wet wipes! For on the go wet wipes, pull out a handful of the squares, squeeze gently, and then place into a reusable bag (like these here). To wash, simply toss into the washing machine as you would soiled towels. Be sure to replace the water and coconut oil every second day.

For face wipes: I like to use two types of fabrics for this! One super soft fabric like an old baby blanket and another semi-rough fabric for a light exfoliation. Slice into small squares. These are fantastic for oil cleansing.

DIY Zero Waste Swaps: Never Buy Drinking Glasses Again!

It may drive Martin a bit crazy, but we have NEVER had traditional drinking glasses. We drink from old jars!

As a woman who loves to DIY just about everything…I have to say that I have my fair share of glass jars! We save each and every one and use them for drinking glasses, overnight oats glasses, dessert glasses, DIY beauty recipes, and tons of prepping needs. I cannot recommend saving your glasses enough! It’s like…free stuff! haha.

Every Sunday I start off my meal prep by blending up 3 sauces/dressings for dipping and drizzling. My glass jars are the perfect companions for this and I have them in almost every size, so it’s always a perfect fit! We keep the large ones (think sauerkraut or pasta sauce) for drinking, keep the small ones for baby sized drinks, and the rest is used for everything in between. I do recommend storing the lids in a reusable bag somewhere that’s convenient – they are a pain in the butt for the junk drawer!

DIY Zero Waste Swaps: Homemade Face Cleansers

      DIY Zero Waste Swaps

There are a few different ways to go about cleansing your face in the zero waste/low waste realm. You could go with Martin’s routine of using warm water and a light exfoliating cloth wipe (his skin is fabulous by the way), you could go with a sudsing clean via Castile soap, a muddy clean via bentonite clay, or an oil cleansing clean via my current favorite recipe! I’ll be sharing each one with you today.

Warm Water and an exfoliating cloth wipe: this is where your raggedy old towels and clothes come in! You need a light exfoliating cloth (Martin uses the babies old bath towel cut into squares) and warm water. If he is extra dirty, he will use some coconut oil as well.

The Castile Soap Solution: For this you will need some Castile soap and water. Essential oils are a great addition (I enjoy lavender and frankincense). I used this face wash for the first year on our journey and it was lovely! However, my skin let me know (yes, she speaks to me in her own way) that she needed something much more nourishing as I got older. If you want to try this cleanse out, mix together 8 oz water with 8 oz liquid Castile soap. If you wish to add the essential oils, add in 15 drops of each lavender and frankincense! Feel this recipe out and then add more water as needed until it reaches your desired feeling.

Shocked? See! I told you it was easy!

Bentonite Clay Cleanse: Even though I am strictly and oil cleanser now (see below), I still use my bentonite clay once a week to deep clean. I highly recommend it! Simply add 2 tsp (using a non metal spoon) of bentonite clay to the palm of your hand followed by 2 tsp of water. Mix and then rub into your face very well. I like to let it sit for a few minutes and then wash off with luke warm water. Pat dry and follow up with a face oil or moisturizer.

My Oil Cleanser: First, you want to choose your base. My research recommends sunflower oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, hemp oil or grapeseed oil. You can mix and match to your liking. I personally use straight jojoba oil and then I add lavender and frankincense essential oils directly to the bottle with a dropper. I pick up my jojoba oil from our local farmers market every 6-8 weeks or so for about 10 euros a bottle and bring back the empty bottle. So here is how I go about this: First, I add about a hefty tsp of oil to the palm of my hand and rub it into my face and neck. I like to massage my face for a solid minute or 2 and let the oil sit for an extra minute. I grab my face cloth, run hot water over it, and quickly wring it out. Next, I lay the warm cloth over my face and gently wipe my face. There should still be oil sitting on the face (a very light layer), so no need for an additional moisturiser!

DIY Zero Waste Swaps: The Orphan Socks

      DIY Zero Waste Swaps:

This swap is genius and I cannot take any credit for it. I owe all credit for this idea to our neighbour who has been doing this for years haha.

Take all of your old orphan socks and place them in a two jars: One for the large socks and the second for the smaller. The large socks are fantastic to use as dusters and many will even fit the a dusting mop (think swiffer!). The first time I saw her dust mop with the orphan sock, I fell in love.

The small socks are fantastic for SO many things. Crafts, halloween costumes, homemade dolls, bath soaks (add oatmeal to a sock, tie and drop into a bathtub!), ice compressor covers (fill with some peas, ice or whatnot when someone has a boo-boo), and so much more. Keep those socks!

I truly hope these 5 simple ideas helped you to look at zero waste a bit more enthusiastically! I promise, it is such a fun and creative way to live.

Vegan & Sustainable Fashion by LANIUS

Hello, loves, and welcome back to the blog! Today we are honoured to feature the amazingly beautiful  “Peta Approved” Vegan Fashion Line by LANIUS.

As you all know, I am such a big supporter of sustainably vegan brands and also those who are doing their best to provide sustainable and vegan options for our community. Ethical fashion is a big passion of mine and I had the best time shooting for this new PETA approved (woo-hoo!) fashion line. Our social media inbox is always flooded with messages about ethical fashion, so let’s get to it!

Vegan & Sustainable Fashion by Lanius

      FASHION WITH RESPECT FOR
      PEOPLE, ANIMALS & ENVIRONMENT

      LANIUS has three guiding principles:

      Love Fashion.

      Think Organic.

      Be Responsible.

In today’s fashion highlight, we are going to break down everything that makes LANIUS great. We will chat about sustainability, production, transparency, and ethics.

Let’s get educated on the Vegan & Sustainable Fashion by LANIUS!

      A Brief Overlook of LANIUS

Vegan & Sustainable Fashion by Lanius

Slow FashionSlow fashion is the movement of designing, creating, and buying garments for quality and longevity. It encourages slower production schedules, fair wages, lower carbon footprints, and more. The team of Lanius creative designers produces new LANIUS collections twice a year in their Cologne workshop.

Sustainability is at the forefront of their minds: LANIUS uses materials produced according to controlled ecological standards. Season after season, Lanius invests intensive research to become even better, even more sustainable and to be able to offer you even more beautiful qualities.

Natural & Organic Materials: Natural materials are the key to high-quality. Organic cotton, organic linen, hemp, tencel, and more are used to create their gorgeous pieces.

Cruelty-Free: Today we are featuring the “Peta Approved Vegan Fashion Line”, but what about the other fashion lines held by Lanius? Out of love and respect for animals, Lanius uses neither real fur nor down. When it comes to wool, they stick to a strict “no-mulesing“ policy. To learn more about their practice, please click here.

Responsible: Lanius assumes responsibility for people, animals, as well as the environment. The production sites comply with social and environmental standards, which are regularly checked by independent institutions and the company themselves.

Fair Working Conditions: Lanius has production centers in Lithuania, Portugal, Bulgaria, Turkey, Peru, China and India. Each one of these amazing centres is held to the highest standards.

      LANIUS Founder: Claudia Lanius

Claudia Lanius had a strong vision when she started up the LANIUS brand. She envisioned a fashion brand that combined eco-friendly materials with fair working conditions, feminine silhouettes and the perfect fit. It’s pretty easy to see that she has successfully turned her vision into a reality and has inspired brands all over the world to take crucial steps in becoming more sustainable, ethical, and conscious.

The creative designers of LANIUS create TWO new collections each and every year. Compare this with the fast fashion’s industry 52+ collections each year, and you will begin to see just how miraculously slow and sustainable LANIUS truly is. LANIUS uses the highest quality materials, with strong attention to detail, and creates fashionable pieces that will last the test of time.

LANIUS is, in all regards, exactly what we need in this fashion world.

Vegan & Sustainable Fashion by LANIUS: Transparency is Key

When shopping via the LANIUS website, you have the options of selecting Detail, Sustainability, Care, Material and Production. This is probably one of my most favorite features of the LANIUS site. The transparency of this company is so very refreshing! With just a click of a button, customers can make educated decisions on their clothes and know that they are supporting a wonderful company that stands behind strong ethics. Imagine if all brands were as transparent as this one?

We at WonderMamas were so very excited to see “production” as a category that is easily accessible when shopping. This production category let’s the consumer know where the clothing was made, a bit of background information, certifications, and fair trade conditions. Just marvelous.

Vegan & Sustainable Fashion by LANIUS

Sustainable development is based on the so-called three pillar system: economic, environmental and social. The folks behind LANIUS see sustainability as a future-oriented and ongoing process. They take into consideration the people, animals and the environment. LANIUS’S defining strength is the ability to produce fair, high-quality and eco-friendly collections season after season.

How does LANIUS stay committed to their values?

Here are a few wonderful ways:

      • LANIUS is a GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified companyThis provides a uniform certification process in the production of sustainable textiles. A product receives the GOTS seal when the entire supply chain, from cultivation to production, is certified in every step. The seal is renewed annually and the companies are subject to regular checks.
      • The bioRe® FoundationWith every purchase of the LANIUS charity shirt line, 3 euros per shirt will go to the school project of the bioRe® foundation, thus enabling the preservation, expansion and operation of a school for the children of the LANIUS organic cotton farmers. The bioRe® Foundation has been supporting infrastructure development in India and Tanzania since 1997, thus ensuring the sustainable improvement of the living conditions of farmers’ families. The main focus is on the cultivation of organic cotton as a sustainable livelihood, as well as the areas of health, education and livelihood.
      • #NoPlastic Initiative: Through better packaging, organic textile, clever caring, and recycled fibres, LANIUS is fighting back against plastic on a daily basis.
      • Natural Dyeing: This was so very exciting for me to see! Natural dyeing produces 97 % less water contamination compared to conventional dyeing, Energy savings of up to 30 %, and is Gentle and natural to the skin, because it’s free of harmful chemicals. LANIUS is committed to creating more pieces with natural dye. Check out the full break down here!

Vegan & Sustainable Fashion by Lanius

Vegan & Sustainable Fashion by LANIUS: Peta Approved!

So now to the most exciting part, the Vegan Fashion Line! I am thrilled to share this with you all. Let’s take a look!

The vegan fashion line by LANIUS is everything that you would expect from a company with such high standards. The fibres are top of the line, the pieces are absolutely timeless, and you can feel good purchasing something for yourself without worrying about the high consequences of fashion. I love that LANIUS took the time and effort to become Peta approved certified through the application and interview process. This really shows how much they honour the vegan lifestyle and I truly appreciate that.

What is the “Peta Approved Logo”?

The “PETA-Approved Vegan” logo allows companies that sell apparel, accessories, furniture, or home decor to highlight their vegan offerings, helping consumers find animal-free products at a glance and make purchases that align with their values.

Ethical consumers can rest assured knowing that the entire article, as well as its manufacture, are free from animal ingredients.

‘As more and more people decide to live vegan – for the sake of animals, the environment and their own health – …we try to offer more and more vegan garments at LANIUS as well. The PETA “Approved Vegan” label marks our vegan garments and assures that the entire article as well as its manufacture are free from animal ingredients.’

The vegan collection is not small in any way whatsoever. I actually attempted to count how many options LANIUS had in their vegan collection, and it was well over 150+ (possibly way more, I had to stop scrolling!). Each piece is just as beautiful and timeless as the next. When scrolling through, you will see a few fibres stand out : Tencel Lyocell, organic cotton, organic linen, and recycled materials. The fashion pieces vary greatly and you can come here to find a great collection of capsule wardrobe pieces, staple items, formal wear, outdoor wear, and so much more.

Here are a few of my favourites from the collection:

      Soft Sheath Dress

Soft Sheath Dress: 48% cotton, from controlled organic cultivation | 47% TENCEL™ Modalfibers | 5% elastane

      Casual Marlene pants Lanius

Casual Marlene Pants: 82% cotton, from controlled organic cultivation | 18% linen

      Lanius Kaftan Dress

Kaftan Dress: 82% cotton, from controlled organic cultivation | 18% linen

As an ethical fashion researcher and consumer, I was thrilled to see the large selection of cuts, colours, and styles. I often feel as though we have very limited options in this ethical fashion world and this is not the case with the LANIUS vegan fashion line. One thing that I was not too thrilled about was the sizing options that are offered. After looking through the site, I noticed that the sizes only range from a size 34-44. This would equal to a size 2-12 in the states.

I also noticed a lack of diversity and sizing in the models.

I am hoping that LANIUS will make more ethical pieces that are size inclusive, showcase the clothing in various sizes, and also showcase the clothing on a more diverse group of models. These are rather large issues in the sustainable and ethical fashion world and we do need to speak up about it as consumers and bloggers.

And that is it for us today, folks! Gosh, I love ya. Thank you so much for being here, for reading my articles, and for supporting my work every single day. I am so truly honoured to have you all in this community. A quick heads up on this blog post: LANIUS has sponsored my work here but has in no way pushed me or leveraged me to speak in any which way. I have truly fallen head over feels in love with this brand and cannot wait to share more about them with you all in the future! I highly recommend bookmarking their website for when you are in need of an ethically made, high quality, fair trade, and gorgeous number for your closet.

All About EarthHero: Online Marketplace for Conscious Consumers

EarthHero: The Online Marketplace for Conscious Consumers

This is it. The online marketplace that we have all been waiting for. A marketplace that not only takes sustainability and eco-friendliness into consideration when working with brands but a marketplace that has a strict screening and selection process to ensure that their customers are choosing the best of the best. I would like to formally introduce you all to EarthHero: The Eco-Friendly Online Marketplace for conscious consumers.

I am truly honored to share this company, EarthHero, with our WonderMamas community. We have worked tirelessly to share with our followers the best of the best and it feels so good to share this eco-friendly online marketplace with you all. Just think….from now on, instead of searching for hours on end for trusted sellers, you can now head to this one site, search as if you were on a popular online marketplace (named after a prominent rainforest, perhaps?) and shop without second-guessing! Goodness gracious, it’s about time! Am I right?!

      EarthHero: The Eco-Friendly Online Marketplace

So let’s dive right in, shall we?

I am going to chat all about this company, how they choose the brands, their mission, their high standards, a few of my favorite products, and more. I urge you (begging on my knees over here) to share this online marketplace with everyone you know. People do not know that a sustainable marketplace exists and it’s not something that everyone really thinks about until we tell them! Let’s make sustainable living the new normal. Together, we can truly make a difference. Just by sharing this company, either in conversation or online, we can help to light the way for an eco-friendly future.

So, without further babbling, let’s learn all about EarthHero, The Eco-friendly Online Marketplace!

(P.s. before you jump the gun and start shopping away, we have a discount code AND a big sale announcement for you at the end of this blog post!)

EarthHero Online Marketplace: Vision & Mission

If you have been on the sustainable shopping journey for a while, you may be a vision and mission statement junkie like myself. If not, then I highly recommend that you check your future sellers for their mission statements before purchasing. You can learn A LOT from a companies mission statement, let me tell you!

EarthHero’s mission statement made me break out into a big smile.

The words sat well with my heart, my lifestyle, and my optimistic view of the future.

To start, EarthHero‘s vision is to make sustainable and eco-friendly shopping the new normal. They have successfully laid out the groundwork for this “new normal” by choosing trusted, high-quality brands and goods that create an authentic positive impact. (We will chat about their screening and selection process a little bit later in the blog post).

The mission statement pairs beautifully with their vision: to empower their customers to take action by simply shopping through their online marketplace. “We make it simple for you to buy high quality, reliable products that are produced using sustainable methods and materials. We’re giving you easy access to suppliers, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs who are committed to creating the products you want in a way that respects the Earth. We believe there shouldn’t be a conflict between environmentally sustainable and high quality. The products you find on EarthHero are both.”

I cannot agree with this simple and genius mission statement enough; our society relies heavily on ease of shopping and EarthHero takes all of the hard work out of sustainable shopping and makes it easy.

Intrigued?! I sure hope so. Let’s find out more!

      EarthHero: The Eco-Friendly Online Marketplace

EarthHero: They don’t just talk the talk…

EarthHero is 100% dedicated to a sustainable, responsible, and eco-friendly future. They host well over 150+ trusted brands but they are also a trusted brand in an of themselves! Here are just a few highlights of this amazing online marketplace:

      • B Corp Certified: Businesses who have been awarded this prestigious certification have met the highest standards of environment and social performance, transparency, and legal accountability. Each B Corp certified company has been evaluated and scored on how it impacts the environment, community, workers, and customers. The scores are made public and each company strives to improve its score each and every day! These companies are redefining what “success” means in the business world.
      • 1% For The Planet: 1% of all sales (annually) are donated to sustainable initiatives and organizations that give back to the planet.
      • Carbon Free Partner: EarthHero knows that shipping is not the most eco-friendly thing to do and so they partnered with CarbonFund.org to ensure that your products arrive with the least amount of impact possible. There’s even a very cool Carbon Calculator that they use to offset the carbon emitted through the shipping and transportation of the goods.
      • Zero Waste Initiatives In and Out of the Office: These folks are serious about protecting our planet and I love it. From the reusable water bottles and 100% recycled paper in the office to reused shipping boxes and plastic-free shipping tape outside of the office…they are next level inspirational. You can absolutely trust in their company and the workers who make it tick.
      • Plus so much more!

EarthHero Online Marketplace: Over 150 Brands that you can trust (No greenwashing here, folks!)

The brands that EarthHero works with are some of my all-time favorite brands in the World. One thing that I love about this marketplace is that they have an entire page dedicated to educating their customers on each and every brand (check out the list of brands here).

Each and every story is inspiring, and if you are anything like me, you may spend a solid 5-6 hours clicking through each and every story and feeling so unbelievably uplifted by all the good that is being done in the world.

As I said before, EarthHero is all about transparency (Hello, B Corporation Certified!) and they have found an easy way to educate their customers with simple sustainable logos.

These logos let you know exactly what kind of impact the company has on the environment (ink, packaging, GMO-free, sulfate-free, compostable, etc), the organic content (USDA certified organic, GOTS certified, etc), the recycled content (recycled glass, recycled nylon, Econyl, etc), if it is made of a renewable resource (cork, bamboo, Lenzing Tencel, etc), the responsibility logo for the specific brand (cruelty-free, fair trade certified, plants a tree, etc), and the upcycled content.

Each one of these logos is easy to understand and the sustainable logos page has the further reading attached to each specific logo.

      EarthHero: Eco-Friendly Marketplace

Alright Alright, But What Does EarthHero Sell?!

The EarthHero Online Marketplace has the following categories: Zero Waste (my favorite), clothing and accessories (my second favorite), Baby + Kids, Travel, Home, Outdoors, Audio + Tech, Pets, Beauty + care, and Gifts. Phew, that is a lot of categories!

These all line up right at the top of the website for easy access and when you hover over the selection, you will see a ton of options that relate to that category. EarthHero has a helpful “featured brand” section that I really like and have discovered some amazing new brands from this helpful side category.

I’m not going to lie, I felt so good scrolling through this website because so many of the brands that I have shared with you all over the years have a little home in this marketplace. Just knowing that our favorite brands are supporting and being supported by this wonderful platform makes me all giddy!

What if you cannot find what you are looking for?

Pretty much, if you want something, they will most likely have it in some sustainable and eco-friendly way. If they do not have a product that you are looking for, help a brother (or sister) out and shoot them an e-mail with your request. Companies like this (You know…ones who care) are always looking for ways to do better!

      Do they ship internationally?

Not yet, but that is coming soon! Woop Woop!

Do you have an awesome discount code for us?!

You bet I do! Use code “wondermamas” at checkout for 10% off your purchase!

Some of My Favorite EarthHero Items

Before we go into my favorite items from the EarthHero Online Marketplace, I want to suggest that you bookmark or favorite this website for the future. So many times we revert back to old ways and our fingers begin typing in “A….M….A….Z….”, you get the picture haha. I want to urge you to keep this website at the forefront of your mind when it comes to making purchases. Rewire the brain for sustainability!

Here is a fun list of my favorite items on the website:

      • Global Healing Collective + Wild Foundation Gift Box: This amazing zero waste box is full of goodies to start you on your journey and 10% of the profits go directly to the Wild Foundation! This box includes 100% recycled produce bags, a stasher sandwich bag, an EarthHero Bamboo Utensil Kit, Stainless Steel Straw and Brush, and an adult bamboo toothbrush.
      • The Kid Kanteen 12oz Water Bottles: Just perfect for kids and so easy for parents to clean!
      • Kid’s Ziptuck Reusable Snack bags: Again, just so easy to use and perfect for kiddos (and big kiddos).
      • 3-in-1 Splash Stainless Steel Lunchbox: Ummm…if you do not know about these magical boxes then you are welcome! Perfect for any human being because we are all a hot mess when it comes to food.
      • The Cora Ball: Catch those nasty plastic microfibers that fall off your clothes in the wash with this magical ball. It can’t catch them all (pesky rascals) but it does help a lot!
      • 5 Piece Straw and Brush Set: Hands down the best reusable straws ever!
      • Compostable Phone Case by Pela Case: Protect your phone from scratches, shocks, and falls while also protecting the planet!
      • The Full Elate Makeup Line: Now you all know that I hardly ever wear make-up, but I do love this line. It feels very light, the packaging is zero waste, and it’s a company that you can really stand behind and be proud to wear.
      • Ida Vegan Soy Candle + Planter: Talk about a cool gift. If someone was to gift me something sweet, it would be something like this. A soy candle (that smells amazing and is free of additives, colorants, phthalates, and toxins) and it turns into a planter once all used up?! It also comes with wildflower seeds to plant + growing instructions. Genius. Practical. Danielle Approved. This is the photo above :).

Indoor Activities for Toddlers: Simple and Easy At-Home Ideas for Toddler Play!

Got Toddlers at Home? Here is our list of Simple and Easy Indoor Activities for Toddlers!

Welcome back to the blog! Our Instagram page has been blowing up with questions and wonderful input for how we can keep our toddlers creative, inspired, imaginative, and active. With the current shut-down of daycares and preschools around the globe, we are thrilled to share this list with our community.

I absolutely love this stage in my children’s life. They are big balls of energy and activity and soak things up like a sponge! No need for homework, tests or any of that boring stuff. We can literally just play ALL day! Woop Woop!

So, without further blabbing (like always), I’m just gonna get into it because my toddlers are currently destroying my house and I need to get off this computer to avoid permanent damage hahaha.

Indoor Activities for Toddlers: Sensory Play

Probably one of our all-time favorites from around 6 months of age! All you need is a low dipped bucket/container/washing basin of some sort (not too tall or it’s super uncomfortable for the little ones), a sheet to lay on the floor for all the spills (super easy clean up), the sensory choice (sand, polenta, chia seeds, water, beans, etc), tools to help them play (scoops, cups, bowls, old plastic bottles from whatever, etc), and freedom! Freedom is key here. Let them explore and imagine whatever they wish!

      Some great, SIMPLE sensory ideas

      • Polenta (this is a bright yellow and kids love it)
      • Chia seeds with water and food coloring (You can choose any food color you like – or make your own with beet powder/turmeric powder!)
      • Water (Probably the cleanest option and kids always love to play with water. I like to keep water play outside)

      Some fun additions

      • Old muffin tins for the kids to fill up
      • Kitchen utensils
      • Toy cars/Hidden toys in the sensory bins for them to find
      • Cookie cutters (only use the ones without the sharp edges)
      • Flowers (I love to add flowers and leaves to our bins)

      Indoor Activities for Toddlers: Building

      Indoor Activities for Toddlers

Toddlers can build with anything. ANYTHING. My sons use their actual building blocks very rarely and instead like to build with sticks, yoga blocks, cans, old cardboard boxes that I have saved, and whatever else they can get their hands on.

I love to show them how they can tear the building down without fear or sadness and then make a really fun game out of it. Then I retreat to the corner with my book and let them go at it for a good 45 minutes haha.

Indoor Activities for Toddlers: Sing and Dance

I have never met a child who does not like to sing and dance. If you have a good amount of energy, put on some fun music and dance with your kids! This is where the most magical memories are made, in my humble opinion. We absolutely sing and dance at LEAST once a day. Sometimes up to 10 times a day. It’s always a wonderful break to take after a meltdown or a sibling fight as well.

I love to sing and dance to kids’ songs. You can simply type in “Super simple songs” or just “Kid Dance Songs” into your Spotify or amazon music. The playlists are great! Try to keep the TV off for this time and just use the music to keep the kids moving and shaking!

Indoor Activities for Toddlers: Imitate Mom and Dad

This is Martin’s favorite thing to do with the boys when he gets home! He asks the boys to come over to him and then says…..

Ok Guys, can you do…..THIS?! (and he kicks his leg or jumps up and down)

And then the boys try to copy daddy!

This goes on for 30 minutes sometimes haha and it’s hilarious.

      Some fun things for imitation:

      • Honestly, any workout move. Pushups are always HILARIOUS
      • Pretend you are a bird, dog, cat, mouse, etc
      • Clapping, stomping, jumping, spinning
      • Pretend nap and then make loud alarm songs to get up!
      • Imitate clean up. This works like a charm for littles to learn how to clean a mess of toys up.
      • Balance: Balance on one leg, balance sitting on your butt with one or two legs up, etc.
      • Numbers: Can you copy daddy jumping three times? How about four times?

Indoor Activities for Toddlers: Tape A Track

This is the one we are actually doing today! All you need is some painters tape and your imagination.

Simply tape a carpet or the floor with the painter’s tape to create your very own maze or race track for the little’s cars! You can make walkways, zig-zag race tracks, a simple village, or whatever else you can think of. Have fun!

Indoor Activities for Toddlers: Painting (in the tub!)

Tape some large pieces of paper to the bathtub wall (or let them paint the tile, it’s up to you) and place the kiddos in the tub with brushes and paint! They can finger paint, face paint, body paint….honestly it does not matter because you can easily clean them up when they are finished. Woo hoo!

I love finger paints for this activity but any will work. You can also use our favorite Stabilo crayons for this for a mixture of paint and crayons with an easy grip for the kids. Whatever you feel like!

Toddler Play at Home: Cloud Gazing

I didn’t even realize how much of a hit this was until we were under quarantine for 7 days and the boys kept laying on the balcony and staring at the clouds. It was so sweet and heartwarming. If you are stuck at home with just a balcony, try this out for sure. It’s really fun to make up characters and figures in the clouds with the littles!

Toddler Play at Home: Crayon on a string or in a box

This was a super cute idea from one of our amazing followers! Tie a string around a crayon or marker and attach it to a box. The little can then color and you won’t’ have to worry too much about them running to your walls and going nuts while you use the bathroom haha. Another great idea is to get a huge box and then sit you little inside and just let them go wild with a bunch of crayons and markers!! I like to cut out little holes like windows so they can feel like they are in a house built just for them!

Toddler Play at Home: Toilet Paper Tunnels

Save all your paper rolls (from wherever) and then make fun tunnels for cars or balls! Simple tape the rolls onto the floor and make a super fun track for the kids to go wild with.

You can even color them and tape them vertically on a wall and make it a color game. Color one red, one blue and one green. Give the babes a bunch of toys/balls in those colors and have them drop the color matches down the chute into a bucket!

Toddler Play at Home: Build A Box

Take all those boxes from deliveries and create the kid’s favorite spaces!

You can make a car wash, fire station, police station, dollhouse, and whatever else your child’s heart desires! One of our followers built an amazing fire station for her little and we cannot wait to get started on our own!

      Toddler Play at Home: Gardening

My children are obsessed with watering plants and the entire concept behind gardening. Each morning we water something new (even if a fake plant hahaha) and talk about vegetables and fruit. It is truly a wonderful experience and I think your little will love it as well!

      Toddler Play at Home: Cooking

Our children started to help me cook in the kitchen at just 1 year old and I could not recommend it enough! They learn so much about safety, vegetables, spices, herbs and so much more. Leo MUST help me make dinner each night – it’s not even a question anymore haha.

How my children help in the kitchen

      • They add all of my pre-measured spices into the pots for me
      • Mix all of the mixtures (hot or cold) with their large wooden spoons
      • Both kids love to peel the vegetables (carrots and potatoes are their favorites) and help me dice.
      • They collect the vegetable scraps and place them in the compost.

Toddler Play at Home: Frozen Prizes!

Another idea from our followers! So for this one, you will need to freeze items like candy, little toys, or even leaves/sticks/whatever you got. Freeze them into cubes and then place into a bowl and give the children sea salt and water to melt them down to find the prize! Such a cute idea. Our follower told us that this gives here a solid 20 minutes of time to do her yoga :). I Love it!

Toddler Play at Home: Dress Up!

Dress up time! This was probably my favorite activity as a child; I would dress up every single day and play all sorts of imaginary games.

My mother sent over a bunch of fun dress-up outfits for the boys but you can honestly make up whatever you wish with old clothes, some markers, string, and lots of imagination! Have fun!

Toddler Play at Home: Any Sort of Drop in a Box

Kids will drop rocks or objects down holes forever if you let them haha. This photo was taken yesterday in our driveway and Leo sat here for 30 minutes, just as happy as can be! You can make something like this out of boxes, paper, with old crates….pretty much anything you can think of!

      Toddler Play at Home: Bubbles

I save bubbles only for emergencies haha. My arm seriously gets tired blowing these bubbles because kids will want you to do this for hours before moving on. I keep a little bottle of bubble solution in a secret spot for when we are truly in need.

Toddler Play at Home: House Hold Chores

Watering plants, putting clothes away, folding, washing dishes, sorting, drying dishes, sweeping, mopping….you name it and kids can do it. We keep our house free of any harmful chemicals and toxins so they boys can truly help us with every single chore. They love it, we love it, and my semi-clean house is happy!

Toddler Play at Home: Bonding with Furry Friends

Staying home with children is such a treat for our furry friends. Our cat likes to sleep a lot during the day, but when he is awake he wants all of the attention. The boys help me to feed him, brush him, play with him and they love watching as I clean his kitty litter!

Zero Waste Period: A Full Guide to Treating Your Body (and the Environment) Right!

Zero Waste Period: A Full Guide to Figuring Out What Works For YOU!

Welcome back to the blog! If you missed our latest Instagram post where talked all about the magical vulva and vagina, then please check that out on your way out of this blog post. So many of us do not even know the correct name for our genital area and I find that to be a crucial first step to understanding our beautiful bodies. I have found that loving ourselves is one of the BIGGEST steps we can take in this journey to a healthier, more environmentally friendly and more self-compassionate self.

One of the ways that I show my body and my natural surroundings how much I love them is by choosing all-natural and safe products. This includes my shampoo, conditioner, face wash, and even the products that I use for my monthly cycle. A zero-waste period is so much easier, so much more budget-friendly, and so much prettier than we could have ever imagined. Today, I hope, will be the LAST time you ever place anything toxic or disposable into your precious body. In this blog post we will dive into the magical world of a zero-waste period and just how beautiful (and comfortable!) it can be.

      Zero Waste Period

Tampons and Pads have been a part of our lives since most of us received the gift of our cycle around puberty. Commercials, media and good old’ peer pressure lured us into the world of bright-colored plastic-tubed tampons that we somehow figured out how to shove up our vaginas (I’ll never forget that first day, pretty sure that scarred me for a while) or big old disposable pads that never seemed to sit quite right. If one could not afford a tampon or a pad, which is quite common at these high prices for single-use items, then we were forced to roll up some toilet paper into a makeshift pad and hope for the best. Can I just say…Thank goodness those days are over! Today I am going to educate you all on the much better options. Better options for our bodies, our wallets, our environment, and our future. Let’s do this!

A Zero Waste Period: Why Traditional Tampons and Pads Need to GO

Interestingly enough (but not surprising), the astounding waste that disposable tampons and pads create is pretty hard to track down. Turns out, this plastic waste is deemed “medical waste” and was left unnoticed for years. Rough estimates show that in 2018, those with cycles in the U.S. purchased over 5.8 million tampons and ONE human being, in their lifetime, could use anywhere from 5-15 THOUSAND pads and tampons. Guess where those thousands of pads and tampons end up? Yep….in the trash bin.

If you would like to read a ton more on how plastic became such a “norm” in the menstrual world, check out this amazing blog post by National Geographic. It’s a fantastic read!

      Toxic Shock Syndrome

I’ll never forget that day in the theatre class when I was just 17 years old. I had finally got up the nerve to try out a tampon for the first time (pads were driving me absolutely nuts) and within hours of inserting, my skin turned pale white and I nearly fainted in front of my teacher. I attended an all-girls high school right outside of Chicago at the time and the very first thing my teacher asked me was, “Are you wearing a tampon?”

Looking back, I cannot even believe it. How many girls had nearly fainted, or fainted, in front of this woman in all her years of teaching at this school? I was sent to the nurse’s office and then the doctor. Turns out, I was one of many who got Toxic Shock Syndrome from the use of tampons. TSS is typically caused by an overgrowth of bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus. Each year toxic shock syndrome affects about 1 in 100,000 people but the numbers have been on the rise since the popularity of tampons has increased.

Toxic Shock Syndrome began when the tampon companies introduced artificial fibers into the tampons for better absorbency. These fibers are still used today despite this issue and this is something that we all need to be aware of.

      Toxic Chemicals Found in Tampons

Toxic chemicals found in tampons include aluminum, fragrance additives, alcohols, and hydrocarbons. Some tampons also contain dioxin that is leftover from bleaching. Dioxin is a very toxic chemical that has been linked to cancer and is not even legal to use in Europe.

A Zero Waste Period: Making the Switch!

I am going to list all of the zero waste period options from my least favorite to my favorite. It should be noted that I didn’t HATE any of these options, but I do have favorites when it comes to comfort, personal preference, and what works for me. If you love my least favorite, then it’s all good! It’s all about what works for you. I do recommend giving them all a try and even using all of the options – I bounce back and forth between all 4 options depending on how I am feeling that month and also on how heavy or light my period is. Our body is constantly changing.

A Zero Waste Period: The Reusable Period Cups

      Reusable Period Cups

While I do believe that these are the most popular (I’m assuming due to the huge social media impact and super busy lives that most of you lead), these are number four on my list of favorite options. If you do choose the cup, I recommend the Lena Brand!

First, let me tell you why these cups rock:

      • Reusable! Just wash them out and you are set to use again and again and again!
      • Compact and come with a little bag for your purse/backpack/pocket.
      • Very aesthetically pleasing
      • Do not contain any harmful ingredients!
      • The cups move with your body; you can dance, run, swim, jump or, if you are like me, sleep all day haha.
      • Different sizes for different ages and size.
      • SUPER afforadable. I mean…..SUPER DUPER affordable.
      • The cups simply collect the blood without absorbing or drying out your sensitive insides.

Sheesh, these really do sound amazing, huh?! So why am I not a big fan? I guess it’s just my personal preference but I do not like inserting anything into my body. Again, just a personal preference.

A few things I noticed about the cups that I did not like:

      • While this is washable and reusable, if you are not in a certain type of bathroom then it’s a pretty big mess. I was in a public restroom with the sink outside of the bathroom stall and I was in a sort of a period emergency situation haha. Let’s just say…I do not recommend using these if you have a heavy month and will be using public restrooms a lot!
      • Insertion: Again, I do not like anything in my body. The insertion process was just uncomfortable (as are tampons for me) and I never like to do it. I will say though, once the cup is inside, I could not feel a thing!
      • Smell: After about 1 month of use, there was this smell that I could not get off of the cup. Thanks to bloggers like EthicallyKate, I found out that placing the cup in the sun cleared this up right away! This is a really big tip for those of you who want to use the cups. The sun is a great disinfectant and works like magic.

A Zero Waste Period: The Reusable Pads

      Period Pads

Third on the list, The amazing and super cute reusable period pads! I have talked about this before, but when the boys first started to cloth diaper, I used the extra bamboo inserts for my periods. I LOVED them! About 4 months later, they needed more inserts for their growing urine needs (hahaha!!) and I decided to purchase some pretty reusable pads for my bathroom. I actually keep these in a pretty golden vase right above the toilet and use them as needed.

      Why Reusable Period Pads Rock:

      • No need to insert anything into your vagina; just snap them onto your undies and you are set!
      • Super easy to wash, I wash just like I do my cloth diaper inserts. I use soap nuts (any detergent will work) and when finished, I hang dry in the sun. They are totally dryer safe too.
      • Gorgeous – the prints are so cute and they snap into little squares that fit right into the palm of your hand.
      • Absorption: They absorb surprisingly well and I have yet to have any issues in that department.

So Why Number 3 on the list?

      • As many of you know, I ride my bike at least 3-4 times a week with the boys attached with the bike stroller. Oye. These pads are not meant for cycling at all. The snaps at the bottom of the underwear dig right into my body from the cycling seat and it hurts. Best for doing everything BUT cycling haha.
      • A bit bulky: I am a tight and yoga pant wearing lady who doesn’t pull out the jeans unless I’m feeling fancy. These are just a tiny bit (really not bad at all) bulky and not the best for yoga pants. These are fantastic for jeans, dresses, and skirts!

A Zero Waste Period: Free Bleeding

I’m actually laughing as I type this right now because I am assuming there are a ton of you with faces like, “What the HELL?!”. Yes, I thought the same when I first found out that folks still do this. Of course, we all know that there were times when we free bled all over the world because tampons and pads were not in existence until pretty recently. However, why would anyone continue to do this today?

It’s actually pretty amazing. I was talking to this woman who told me that she has been free-bleeding for 10 years now and can control her body. Meaning, she can control when the blood was released from her vagina and when it was to stay put. I couldn’t believe it…so you know what I did? I tried it for myself!

For the entire year of 2017, I free bled.

I talked about it a few times but mostly I kept it to myself and just did my thang. I did as the woman said and bought two, thick red towels that I used when I was at home. For the majority of the week, I simply walked around with just the towel wrapped around my waist (no underwear) and had a t-shirt or sweater on top. Anytime that I felt the release of blood coming, I would either walk to the bathroom and sit on the toilet or I would use the red towel to wipe it up. I am not even kidding you, within 3 months I was so confident in my practice that I would walk around town with nothing on. My body and I were completely in-sync.

Now, if you are going to go this route, you have to take the entire menstrual cycle (4-6 days) easy and really be aware of your body. This practice is best for those who can stay at home for the duration of the cycle to get used to it. I would suggest this to stay at home moms, bloggers, or anyone who works from home. It’s amazing how we have lost this natural connection to our bodies through the use of tampons and pads. If you can, give it a whirl!

So, do I still Practice this? Yes! Not all the time, but anytime that I am home, it’s just me and my towel. I did start using option number 1 for whenever I do yoga.

A Zero Waste Period: Period Panties

      zero waste period panties

We made it to my number one zero waste period option: The Period Panties!

I cannot tell you how much I love these period panties. They feel just like regular underwear with just a tad bit of extra padding (which I just call comfort) added to absorb the blood. There are NO leaks. All comfort, no leaks, feels like you are wearing nothing…how can you beat this?!

I have only ever tried the period panties by the Wuka brand. I am sure there are a ton more options out there but I do love this brand. (use discount code Wuka-WonderMamas for 10% off!)

      Why Period Panties Rock:

      • Feels like regular underwear. Yes, I do wear these even when I am not menstruating!
      • Absorbs like a champ: I have never had a leak in all the time that I have used these panties.
      • Holds at least 20ml of blood, which is about 4 tampons worth.
      • Wuka panties are made by MicroModal fabric that is CO2 neutral and 3.5x softer than fine cotton.
      • It can be worn under workouts pants, jeans, skirts, all of it. They are a dream.
      • Vegan approved!
      • Different undies for different days: You can opt for light, medium and heavy flow. I have just the heavy flow ones and I adore them so much.
      • All age approved and different sizes for different ages!
      • Comes in a “first period” pack for our first timers! I love this so much. I feel like this makes that day really special instead of scary. The box contains period panties (based on age), a wash bag and a booklet on everything period!
      • Washes like a champ!

If you follow our family on Instagram, you will know that I have been looking for my forever deodorant for quite some time. I tried homemade deodorant, I tried coconut oil-based deodorant, I tried the most expensive all-natural brands of deodorant, I tried the deodorant balms, the deodorant sprays, and even the lime juice trick. None of them…not a single one…worked as well as the non-toxic deodorant by pit liquor. As a veteran sailor, I should have known that whiskey and vodka were going to be a part of my forever pit routine haha.

Meet the Makers of Pit Liquor

      Jason and Erica

Saddle up your unicorn and join us for a magical armpit journey!

Pit Liquor Creators Erica and Jason

Erica and Jason are the founders of Pit Liquor and the entire Distilled Bath and Body company (pretty amazing in and of itself!). They are loving parents to a little gal named Eve and some very cool cats named Tolkien and Hobbes (pretty sure we just became best friends by the cat names alone). I could go on and on about how cool these two are but let’s jump into the Pit Liquor goodness; How the he-haw-sally did they get into the armpit business??

As like most of us, Erica and Jason were sick and tired of nasty chemicals sneaking their way into their home. They decided to fix the issue themselves and create a truly non-toxic deodorant that not only works but works well.

Here is the very cool Pit Liquor Invention story straight from them:

The story of Pit Liquor began at a most unusual time: During my pregnancy with Eve. Jason was concerned about the carcinogens in our deodorants and we’d been trying various natural alternatives, but none of them worked. One day, he begged me to stop using toxic deodorant for the baby. So I slapped hand sanitizer on my armpits and headed out the door issuing Jason a challenge to find something that actually worked. When I got home, I didn’t stink. Always the inventor, Jason thought plain old hand sanitizer was a boring (and not entirely non-toxic) solution to the underarm stench, but the hand sanitizer illuminated a new idea: high-proof, drinkable alcohol is less toxic than anything unregulated and potentially made from inedible ingredients. So, obviously, we turned to whiskey to solve our quandary.

Pit Liquor All-Natural and Non-Toxic Ingredients

The majority of you are here for this huge chunk of information, so let’s just go ahead and start with this:

What is in the Pit Liquor Deodorant??
      • Organic Vodka and Whiskey: Overproof liquor which is amazing at killing unwanted microbes.
      • Organic Arrowroot: You will notice this at the bottom of your bottle – so be sure to shake before use. The arrowroot helps to keep the armpits a bit more dry and, above all, it’s anti-microbial! Bacteria is scared of this stuff.
      • Himalayan Salt: Don’t even think about drinking this stuff because it will taste like salt – yuck! The salt is meant to keep the bottle for armpit use only and also aids in dryness.
      • Organic Tea Extracts: Purchased from Happy Lucky’s Tea House and The Golden Poppy Herbal Apothecary in Fort Collins, CO. For the list of tea extracts, click here!
      • Organic Scent Components: Amazing vanilla beans, lavender flowers, and black peppercorns and cloves are used to give the deodorant a fragrance.
      • Essential Oils
      • Organic Extracts of lavender and vanilla from local spice shops in the area.

Plus, you can feel so good knowing that all of the Pit Liquor selection of deodorants are vegan, cruelty-free, toxin-free, gluten-free, aluminum-free, paraben-free, mining-free, baking-soda-free, pesticide-free, triglyceride-free, and above all, stink-free (which is just spectacular). The products are also fair trade!

Sustainable Production of Pit Liquor Deodorant

The folks behind Pit Liquor put a lot of conscious effort into their sustainable practices. When I received my own package of Pit Liquor, I was extremely satisfied with the packaging (all recyclable), the bottles (beautiful glass bottles), and of course the nature of the deodorant itself.

While the bottles can be easily recycled, Pit Liquor would actually like you to return the bottles to them so that they can give you a sweet discount for your next purchase and so that the bottles can have a second life!

Here’s how to Recycle the Used Bottles:
      1. Wait until you have 5 empty bottles.
      2. Give them a quick rinse.
      3. Send them back to Distilled Bath and Body (you will pay the shipping) and get a sweet discount code for your next purchase! Don’t forget to subscribe to the awards program as well!
      The Refill Program

Not a fan of shipping back and forth? Looking to reduce your carbon footprint even more? That’s who this program is for! The refill program allows you to buy in bulk and refill at home for up to a year! Genius.

Pit Liquor Coconut Lime with Rum

I decided to pick three deodorants to talk more about in detail, starting with this epic “Summer in a Bottle” coconut rum one. I swear….as soon as I smelled this bottle it was like I was transported back to my summer holidays, pre-kids of course haha. The smell is so amazing.

One extra perk of the pit liquor deodorant ingredient list is that they will not cause any rashes that can sometimes occur with natural deodorants. This is absolutely a rash free deodorant, and my armpits are extremely happy!

      Available in:

      • 3.4 oz, lasts 4-6 months
      • 50 ml, lasts 2-3 months
      • 30 ml, lasts 3-4 weeks
      • reFILL, lasts at least a year

      Pit Liquor Whiskey Lavender

The Pit Liquor Whiskey Lavender has become my daily go-to bottle. I love applying this in the morning before my yoga session and then getting a whiff when I am in a sweaty downward dog haha – Gosh, I have never spoken so freely about my armpits before and I am loving this blog post lol.

When applied, the whiskey and lavender mesh together so beautifully. Once applied, the alcohol kills the bacteria and I am left with this dry powdery lavender smell. It’s magnificent. I highly recommend trying this one first if you want to take the plunge.

Pit Liquor Whiskey Triple Shot Set

While I love the roll-on, Martin is obsessed with these spray bottles. I am honestly thinking that each one of these can last for like…4 months or more? The website says that you only need to apply every 24-48 hours and Martin is applying around 36-48 hours. He smells amazing! I love him in the whiskey black pepper…super sexy smell on his skin.

Each one of these bottles in 100ml! Snag 3 of them for a bit of a discount.

FYI: The website states that each bottle should last 3-4 months. Woohoo!

I think I am going to finish this post off with a quote from my beloved, Martin. Eh hem…

“Baby, this (pronounced “dis” in his German accent) is the BEST deodorant. I did not smell you once in the car today after yoga – it is a miracle!”

      Hahahaha. Oh, my life.

      Big Thanks to Pit Liquor!

The folks behind Pit Liquor were kind enough to gift our family a HUGE box of all the goodies from the deodorant selection. We will be set for well over a year and I can promise you all, we will 100% be purchasing another huge box after these are finished (in the recycle program, of course). I am hooked. I have finally found my and Martin’s forever pit spray! If you have any questions, comments, concerns, please just leave them in the comment section or message me directly. As always, thanks for stopping by!
