OEKO-TEX®: Why I care about this brand and why you should too!

Hello, loves, and welcome back to the blog! Today we are thrilled to talk all about the amazingly beneficial and important labels by OEKO-TEX®. My mission as a sustainable and ethical blogger is to not only share my lifestyle with you in order to inspire change and awareness, but to also educate and help you to navigate your own journey. To break it all down for you so that you can make your own conscious and ethical decisions.

As I like to say, “Give a person some Oat Milk and they drink for a day. Teach a person how to blend some Oats and Water and they drink for a lifetime.” haha!

So, here we go, let’s jump right on in to learning all about OEKO-TEX®: The labels that ensure our clothes and home goods are SAFE!

OEKO-TEX®

What Is The STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®?

World’s Best Known Labels for textiles tested for harmful substances

Customer Confidence

High Product Safety

I first found out about this label while shopping for my children’s very first carpet for their nursery. At this point, I was in the very beginning of my journey to a non-toxic and sustainable home. We were barely making enough income to afford this carpet but I knew that I wanted to ensure the best quality (for our budget!) for my children.

I began researching toxins in textiles and was shocked at the truth. Some scary toxins found in the textile industry include Formaldehyde (for a crease resistant finish and easy care finish ), Azo Dyes which break down over time to become aromatic amines (some dyes can cause contact dermatitis), Heavy Metals (during the dying process) like Antimony and Chromium IV, and more.

Shocking, Right?

I could not believe that this was even legal, let alone able to be sold in my local shops. Thus began our journey into learning all about all the amazing labels out there that put our health and safety at the forefront of their business models.

OEKO-TEX®

Now, when I speak of textiles, I am speaking about so much more than carpets. We are talking clothing, bedding, towels, etc. This is a very large chunk of the material world and we must ensure its safety for our health as well as the health of our planet.

This is where the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® comes in. When you see this label on your textiles, you can rest assured that it is safe for you and your babe. The focus of this label is to ensure the textile poses no risk for human health.

Testing: What is tested?

STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX

All textile products, starting from the threads to the finishing touches, are able to be tested for the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®. Every single component is tested in order to carry the label.

What about the Health & Safety of our Environment?

Keeping our family and ourselves safe from the harmful toxins of the textile industry is of utmost importance, but what about the health and safety of our home that we all share? The health and safety of our environment and neighbours?

This is where the MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX® comes in!

OEKO-TEX®

What Is MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX®?

Traceable Product Label

Carries the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certification

Guarantees the article has been made using sustainable processes under socially responsible working conditions via STeP by OEKO-TEX®

Traceable Product Label

Each and every MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX® item can be traced using a unique product ID or QR code. This amazing traceable label gives access to the consumer regarding production facilities , the stage of production, and the countries where the manufacturing took place.

The Story Behind OEKO-TEX®

I’m always amazed at how just a few dedicated folks band together to create something as extraordinary as these labels. Let’s take some time to get to know the story behind OEKO-TEX®!

OEKO-TEX®
Left to right: Raimar Freitag (Testex textile testing institute), Prof. Wilhelm Herzog (Austrian textile research institute), Prof. Dr. Jürgen Mecheels, Dr. Rainer Weckmann, Dieter Walden, Dr. Stefan Mecheels (Hohenstein research institute)

Let’s start with the name. OEKO-TEX®  is short for the International Association for Research and Testing in the Field of Textile and Leather Ecology.

The OEKO-TEX® association started in Zurich in March of 1992. Founding members were the German Hohenstein Institute and the Austrian Textile Research Institute (OETI).  In April of 1992, OEKO-TEX® introduced their very first STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® label at the Interstoff Trade Fair and the rest, as you can say, is history!

Currently, OEKO-TEX® consists of 18 independent research and test institutes in the field of textile and leather ecology in Europe and Japan with contact offices in more than 60 countries around the World.

Have we changed your mind on Textiles?

I sure hope so!

Be sure to check for the OEKO-TEX® labels the next time you shop and stay safe out there!

OEKO-TEX®

Well, my loves, that is all for today. I sure hope this post was as educational as it was inspirational for you all. Please be safe out there and get to know all of your labels when shopping. If you are unsure about something in your textiles, be sure to ask and do the research. It’s unbelievable what is legal to sell nowadays. Have a very happy and healthy week and I’ll chat with you all soon!

This post is a sponsored post, but as always, I truly stand behind every company that we share on this website. Thank you!

Sustainable, Ethical & Handcrafted Organic Cotton Textiles by Zuahaza

Hello, loves, and welcome back to the blog! Today we are honoured to feature the handcrafted & organic textiles from the women of Zuahaza.

As you all know, I am such a big supporter of sustainable and ethical brands from fashion to home decor. I am beyond thrilled to share this company with you all today.

Organic Cotton Textiles by Zuahaza

ORGANIC COTTON TEXTILES HANDMADE IN COLOMBIA

ZUAHAZA honours the makers, culture and craft.

Collective Sisterhood.

Social Enterprise.

Always ethical and sustainable.

In today’s sustainable home goods highlight, we are going to break down everything that makes Zuahaza one of our absolute favourites. We will chat about sustainability, production, faces behind the brand, and ethics.

Let’s get educated on the Ethical & Sustainable textiles by Zuahaza!

A Brief Overlook of Zuahaza

Organic Cotton Textiles by Zuahaza-min

Handmade: The organic cotton textiles by Zuahaza tell a story of Colombia through thoughtful craftsmanship. Many of us adore slow fashion, and this practice is also brilliant in home goods. The quality, style, and love put forth towards each item is unlike any other.

Sustainable: Zuahaza respects Earth and her resources with the highest regard. Organic materials and processes are only the base of this company. We have watched in their stories and highlights all of the fantastic ways they are using nature to dye their fabrics – it’s truly inspirational.

Social Enterprise: As a social enterprise, Zuahaza strives to embody a sisterhood between the women in Colombia. Zuahaza translates to “my sister” in the Muisca language of the Cundiboyacense people.

Women supporting Women: Zuahaza strives to connect women from across Colombia. The goal is to create unique products that reflect the Columbian culture, history and craftsmanship. The bond between the workers and their crafts is evident in the high quality.

Fair Trade and Fair Wage:  The folks behind Zuahaza go beyond fair trade and fair wages by supporting the dreams of each and every team member.

Responsible: Zuahaza assumes responsibility for the environment and those living within. Choosing to work with organic and biodegradable materials saves water and eliminates the harsh chemicals in the soil.

Zuahaza Founder: Tatiana

Tatiana is the founder of Zuahaza as well as the head designer. She has a lot of experience in the artisan field throughout Latin America and also a background in textiles from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Natural dyes and organic fibres are a big part of Tatiana’s advocacy for sustainable production. Having Colombian roots herself, Tatiana holds so much admiration for the indigenous artisans and her favourite part of her job is the interchange of knowledge with her artisans.

Shopping on the Zuahaza website is such a breeze. The artisans work together to create one focal collection (slowly and sustainably) and this collection will be featured for quite a long time. Their first ever collection is called the “Roots” collection and this is what is featured in our blog post today.

Organic Cotton Textiles by Zuahaza

When browsing through the website, you will notice the minimalistic menu that features some of our favourite topics: Approach, Artisans, Values, Process, and Materials. I have said this before and I’ll say it again, companies can never give too much information when it comes to who makes your products, where, why, and how. These are key points of information that allow consumers to make conscious decisions.

How does Tatiana & ZUAHAZA stay committed to their values?

With the help of 7 beautiful and talented women….the artisans.

One of the first things that I noticed about Tatiana and her company was the love she held for her artisans. We began working together at the beginning of the Covid-19 spread and I was blown away at her dedication to helping her artisans make it through the hard times. It has truly been an honour to witness the love shared here.

Zuahaza Artisans

(Left to right in order!)

  • Mariá: Mariá has been a part of the cooperative for 4 years and is a very talented seamstress. She is thrilled to have a job that she loves and also provide for her family.
  • Ana: Ana has been a part of the cooperative for 24 years and is a master weaver and teacher. She is a big believer in preserving ancestral techniques.
  • Graciela: Graciela has been a part of the cooperative for 20 years. She is the administrative head of the co-op as well as sewer and designer. Graciela believes it is very important to teach the history of her ancestors to new generations as a way of preserving the columbian heritage.

Tatiana is in the middle!

  • Martha: Martha is the youngest of the group and has been in the cooperative for 2 years as a weaver. Her skills are far beyond her years! She holds so much love and respect for the artisanal work.
  • Otilia: Otilia has been a part of the cooperative for 8 years. She is an administrative secretary as well as a weaver. She loves to carry on the traditions of her people.
  • Esther: Esther has been an artisan for over 20 years and is a wonderful weaver and spinner. She truly stands behinds this company and believes that the artisan cooperative has rescued the traditions of the Guane culture.
  • Inés (not shown in photo): Inés has been a part of the cooperative for 18 years and is an incredible weaver and spinner. For her, working in the cooperative as an artisan means participating in changing her community, in preserving their cultural heritage, and believing in economic stability for both men and women.

Organic Cotton Textiles by Zuahaza: Values & Philosophy

To create sustainable employment for women artisans in Colombia by revitalizing the craft of making textiles and collaborating to innovate in product and design

Equality of Opinion

Zuahaza is all about collaboration and equality of opinion from start to finish in the design and production process. The dreams, careers, and families of each and every artisan is valued. The folks behind Zuahaza truly believe that each artisan has the vision and skills to participate in the important decision making. Everything is done as a team.

“Collaboration is truly the soul of Zuahaza, as we come and work together as Colombian sisters to create unique sustainable treasures for your home.”

— TATIANA ORDOÑEZ

Honouring the Craft

It has become harder and harder for artisans like those in the Zuahaza team to earn enough money to support themselves and their family. This company wants to change this. These artisans deserve to be recognised and highly respected for the magnificent work that they do. Zuahaza believes in elevating the craftsmen to a much more dignified person in society. I love this!

Waste Happens but Zuahaza is dedicated to reducing and up-cycling as much as possible.

As with every production, waste happens. Even though Zuahaza is dedicated to using 100% organic and natural materials, a bit of waste is produced. To counteract this waste, the artisans create small one of a kind pieces made from scraps to sell such as small purses and bags. They are truly dedicated to become a zero waste production company in the near future and it has been a joy to watch. You can watch along with us on their instagram stories here.

Here are a few of my favourites from the New Collection:

Zuahaza Striped Guayaba Pink Pillow

Striped Guayaba Pink Pillow: 100% organic cotton | 100% naturally dyed | 18”x18” |

Zuahaza Small Naidi Blue & Guayaba Pink Throw

Small Naidi Blue & Guayaba Pink Throw: 100% organic cotton | 100% naturally dyed | 40”x60” |

Zuahaza Diamond Naidi Blue Table Runner

Diamond Naidi Blue Table Runner: 100% organic cotton | 100% naturally dyed | 40”x60” |

As a sustainable & ethical researcher and consumer, I cannot express how excited I was to work with Tatiana and the Zuahaza team to share their products with you all. These pieces of art are decorating our bedroom and living room and they are an absolute dream. Super soft, nice and thick material, the absolute highest quality, and beautiful design of these pillows have transformed our rooms into relaxing havens. I am so exited to see the next collection!

**Thank you to Tatiana and the amazing artisans for gifting us the amazing pillows featured in our blog post and social media posts. This collaboration is definitely not over – we will have these pillows for life and they will be present in so many family photos and future work.

5 Ways To Repurpose Old Clothes

Written by the amazing Rhea of @helpingtheenvironment

Hi there! I think we’ve all been in this situation before: having a bunch of old clothes in your closet and not knowing what to do with them. That’s why today I want to show you how to make use of old clothes instead of throwing them away.

Ethical motivation

Now, why is it so important to be resourceful with the clothes we already have? Well, more often than not, western fast fashion companies exploit workers in developing countries, who are willing to work for lower wages and in unsafe factories. These workers lack workplace protection, are oftentimes abused by employers and work extremely long shifts.

Environmental motivation

From an environmental standpoint, fast fashion also spells disaster. According to Oxfam, it would take 13 years to drink the water needed to make one t-shirt and a pair of jeans! A single cotton t-shirt uses up to 2,700 litres of water during production. And just the UK alone sends 11 million items of clothing to landfill every week.

Get your old clothes ready!

This means that only by repurposing our old fast fashion clothes can we make up for the labor and emissions that went into their production! Throwing them away would furthermore add to the waste problem we already have. So, without further ado, here are five ways to repurpose old clothes and give them new life!

5 Ways to Repurpose Old Clothes

5 Ways to Repurpose Old Clothes: Crop Tops

5 Ways to Repurpose Old Clothes

You need:
  • old shirt, scissors, optionally a sewing kit

Especially in summer, short clothes are a life-saver for hot weather. You can make your own crop tops out of old shirts or blouses!

First, put the shirt on and use a pen to mark a line along which you want to cut.

Make sure you straighten it out before cutting, and use appropriate scissors!

Alternative crop top idea

Another awesome idea is to cut a shirt or blouse into a crop top that you can tie into a knot at the front! Instead of cutting a straight line, you leave two triangles of cloth along the front, which can then be tied.

For some pieces of clothing, I would recommend to hem them afterwards in order to prevent the edges fraying, but it isn’t always necessary.

5 Ways to Repurpose Old Clothes: Hair Ties

5 Ways to Repurpose Old Clothes

You need:
  • old socks, scissors

How to:

Cut off a few stripes at the opening of a sock! Socks have the right size for hair ties and you can choose ones with nice colors and patterns.

Considering hair ties often go missing the moment we buy them, they’re pretty expensive.

5 Ways to Repurpose Old Clothes: Denim Shorts

5 Ways to Repurpose Old Clothes

You need:
  • old jeans, scissors, optionally a sewing kit

Old jeans that don’t fit that well can easily be made into cute shorts by simply cutting them. Raw denim edges are a trend right now, but if you don’t want your shorts to fray too much, you can do a basic stitch along the edge. Alternatively, you can simply cuff your shorts, which also looks pretty cool.

5 Ways to Repurpose Old Clothes: Kitchen Towels

5 Ways to Repurpose Old Clothes

You need:
  • any old clothes, scissors

This one isn’t an outfit idea, but still useful. Any old piece of clothing can be made into a reusable kitchen towel very easily by simply cutting it into equal-sized squares. This way, you’re also reducing your kitchen waste!

5 Ways to Repurpose Old Clothes: Makeup Wipes

5 Ways to Repurpose Old Clothes

You need:
  • old clothes, scissors

Another easy way to repurpose old clothes is to cut them into equal-size round pieces and use them as makeup wipes. It’s especially ecofriendly because
disposable wipes take very long to biodegrade, and this is a quick reusable alternative.

30 Eco Friendly & Zero Waste School Supplies

Eco Friendly & Zero Waste School Supplies

Welcome back to the blog everyone! Today we are super excited to have a guest contributor by the name of Alexandria Winner (from Ecoist) to share her advice on eco-friendly & zero waste school supplies. My school days may be over, but I need all the help I can get with my two children heading off to school in the near future! I love the thought of carefully choosing each and every school supply piece, with not only my children in mind, but with mother earth and the future state of our world in mind.

Be part of the solution, not part of the pollution

Eco Friendly & Zero Waste School Supplies

The typical American school uses about 250,000 pieces of paper per year.

This equates to over 35 Billion sheets of paper JUST in the K-12 schools in the United States.

When you add in the school supplies that the children and teens are bringing into their classrooms, these numbers can easily be multiplied by well over 56 million – which is the number of children and teenagers in school this year according to the National Centre for Education Statistics. And this is “just” paper that we are talking about here, folks. Don’t even get me started on the plastic situation. The numbers are staggering and changes need to be made.

If you are looking to fill those school backpacks with responsible, well-made, eco-friendly, and zero waste items, then you have come to the right place!

psst….Short on Time?

Here are the quick links for our list of Eco Friendly & Zero Waste School Supplies:

Eco-Friendly and Zero Waste School Supplies: Pens & Pencils

eco-friendly & zero waste school supplies

Before ordering a bunch of pens and pencils for school, take a look around your house in your drawers and pen cups to see if you have a bunch of old ones lying around. Who doesn’t, right?! Use those first.

Once those are all used up, then choose one of the many eco-friendly options:

  • OHTO/JPT Pencil/Ball Pen
    • Natural Wood Pencil Ball Pen – 1.0mm
  • OHTO/JPT Stainless Steel & Ceramic Roller Ball Pen
    • Stainless steel pen with a ceramic roller ball, 0.5mm

After all of our research and digging, I was so shocked by just how many companies are in support of sustainable school supplies. This is such great news!

Like we always say here at WonderMamas, please use what you already have first. Even if you have a drawer full of plastic supplies, I beg you to use those first before buying anything new. If you are on a tight budget and cannot afford the pieces listed above, please check out your local second hand stores, second hand online shops, or even second hand swaps. Join facebook groups in your area for second hand school supplies, yes they exist!

In the end, being a conscious consumer is so much more than buying the latest and greatest eco products. The first step is to evaluate what you got, extend its life, and then replace when necessary. I am so honoured that you have chosen us to help you on this journey. Have a beautiful school year!

The words sat well with my heart, my lifestyle, and my optimistic view of the future.

To start, EarthHero‘s vision is to make sustainable and eco-friendly shopping the new normal. They have successfully laid out the groundwork for this “new normal” by choosing trusted, high-quality brands and goods that create an authentic positive impact. (We will chat about their screening and selection process a little bit later in the blog post).

The mission statement pairs beautifully with their vision: to empower their customers to take action by simply shopping through their online marketplace. “We make it simple for you to buy high quality, reliable products that are produced using sustainable methods and materials. We’re giving you easy access to suppliers, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs who are committed to creating the products you want in a way that respects the Earth. We believe there shouldn’t be a conflict between environmentally sustainable and high quality. The products you find on EarthHero are both.”

I cannot agree with this simple and genius mission statement enough; our society relies heavily on ease of shopping and EarthHero takes all of the hard work out of sustainable shopping and makes it easy.

Intrigued?! I sure hope so. Let’s find out more!

EarthHero: The Eco-Friendly Online Marketplace

EarthHero: They don’t just talk the talk…

EarthHero is 100% dedicated to a sustainable, responsible, and eco-friendly future. They host well over 150+ trusted brands but they are also a trusted brand in an of themselves! Here are just a few highlights of this amazing online marketplace:

  • B Corp Certified: Businesses who have been awarded this prestigious certification have met the highest standards of environment and social performance, transparency, and legal accountability. Each B Corp certified company has been evaluated and scored on how it impacts the environment, community, workers, and customers. The scores are made public and each company strives to improve its score each and every day! These companies are redefining what “success” means in the business world.
  • 1% For The Planet: 1% of all sales (annually) are donated to sustainable initiatives and organizations that give back to the planet.
  • Carbon Free Partner: EarthHero knows that shipping is not the most eco-friendly thing to do and so they partnered with CarbonFund.org to ensure that your products arrive with the least amount of impact possible. There’s even a very cool Carbon Calculator that they use to offset the carbon emitted through the shipping and transportation of the goods.
  • Zero Waste Initiatives In and Out of the Office: These folks are serious about protecting our planet and I love it. From the reusable water bottles and 100% recycled paper in the office to reused shipping boxes and plastic-free shipping tape outside of the office…they are next level inspirational. You can absolutely trust in their company and the workers who make it tick.
  • Plus so much more!

EarthHero Online Marketplace: Over 150 Brands that you can trust (No greenwashing here, folks!)

The brands that EarthHero works with are some of my all-time favorite brands in the World. One thing that I love about this marketplace is that they have an entire page dedicated to educating their customers on each and every brand (check out the list of brands here).

Each and every story is inspiring, and if you are anything like me, you may spend a solid 5-6 hours clicking through each and every story and feeling so unbelievably uplifted by all the good that is being done in the world.

As I said before, EarthHero is all about transparency (Hello, B Corporation Certified!) and they have found an easy way to educate their customers with simple sustainable logos.

These logos let you know exactly what kind of impact the company has on the environment (ink, packaging, GMO-free, sulfate-free, compostable, etc), the organic content (USDA certified organic, GOTS certified, etc), the recycled content (recycled glass, recycled nylon, Econyl, etc), if it is made of a renewable resource (cork, bamboo, Lenzing Tencel, etc), the responsibility logo for the specific brand (cruelty-free, fair trade certified, plants a tree, etc), and the upcycled content.

Each one of these logos is easy to understand and the sustainable logos page has the further reading attached to each specific logo.

Alright Alright, But What Does EarthHero Sell?!

The EarthHero Online Marketplace has the following categories: Zero Waste (my favorite), clothing and accessories (my second favorite), Baby + Kids, Travel, Home, Outdoors, Audio + Tech, Pets, Beauty + care, and Gifts. Phew, that is a lot of categories!

These all line up right at the top of the website for easy access and when you hover over the selection, you will see a ton of options that relate to that category. EarthHero has a helpful “featured brand” section that I really like and have discovered some amazing new brands from this helpful side category.

I’m not going to lie, I felt so good scrolling through this website because so many of the brands that I have shared with you all over the years have a little home in this marketplace. Just knowing that our favorite brands are supporting and being supported by this wonderful platform makes me all giddy!

What if you cannot find what you are looking for?

Pretty much, if you want something, they will most likely have it in some sustainable and eco-friendly way. If they do not have a product that you are looking for, help a brother (or sister) out and shoot them an e-mail with your request. Companies like this (You know…ones who care) are always looking for ways to do better!

Do they ship internationally?

Not yet, but that is coming soon! Woop Woop!

Do you have an awesome discount code for us?!

You bet I do! Use code “wondermamas” at checkout for 10% off your purchase!

Some of My Favorite EarthHero Items

Before we go into my favorite items from the EarthHero Online Marketplace, I want to suggest that you bookmark or favorite this website for the future. So many times we revert back to old ways and our fingers begin typing in “A….M….A….Z….”, you get the picture haha. I want to urge you to keep this website at the forefront of your mind when it comes to making purchases. Rewire the brain for sustainability!

Here is a fun list of my favorite items on the website:

  • Global Healing Collective + Wild Foundation Gift Box: This amazing zero waste box is full of goodies to start you on your journey and 10% of the profits go directly to the Wild Foundation! This box includes 100% recycled produce bags, a stasher sandwich bag, an EarthHero Bamboo Utensil Kit, Stainless Steel Straw and Brush, and an adult bamboo toothbrush.
  • The Kid Kanteen 12oz Water Bottles: Just perfect for kids and so easy for parents to clean!
  • Kid’s Ziptuck Reusable Snack bags: Again, just so easy to use and perfect for kiddos (and big kiddos).
  • 3-in-1 Splash Stainless Steel Lunchbox: Ummm…if you do not know about these magical boxes then you are welcome! Perfect for any human being because we are all a hot mess when it comes to food.
  • The Cora Ball: Catch those nasty plastic microfibers that fall off your clothes in the wash with this magical ball. It can’t catch them all (pesky rascals) but it does help a lot!
  • 5 Piece Straw and Brush Set: Hands down the best reusable straws ever!
  • Compostable Phone Case by Pela Case: Protect your phone from scratches, shocks, and falls while also protecting the planet!
  • The Full Elate Makeup Line: Now you all know that I hardly ever wear make-up, but I do love this line. It feels very light, the packaging is zero waste, and it’s a company that you can really stand behind and be proud to wear.
  • Ida Vegan Soy Candle + Planter: Talk about a cool gift. If someone was to gift me something sweet, it would be something like this. A soy candle (that smells amazing and is free of additives, colorants, phthalates, and toxins) and it turns into a planter once all used up?! It also comes with wildflower seeds to plant + growing instructions. Genius. Practical. Danielle Approved. This is the photo above :).

Pit Liquor Non-Toxic Deodorant
Pit Liquor Non-Toxic Deodorant Made from Whiskey!

Pit Liquor Non-Toxic Deodorant Made from…Whiskey and Vodka??

Welcome back to the blog! Today we are super excited to feature my new favorite non-toxic deodorant company, Pit Liquor by Distilled Bath and Body. I was sent a full set of these amazing alcohol-based deodorant’s and I cannot get over how amazing they work to kill odor, keep me fresh, and do so without any harmful chemicals whatsoever.

If you follow our family on Instagram, you will know that I have been looking for my forever deodorant for quite some time. I tried homemade deodorant, I tried coconut oil-based deodorant, I tried the most expensive all-natural brands of deodorant, I tried the deodorant balms, the deodorant sprays, and even the lime juice trick. None of them…not a single one…worked as well as the non-toxic deodorant by pit liquor. As a veteran sailor, I should have known that whiskey and vodka were going to be a part of my forever pit routine haha.

Before we jump into the who, what, where, when, and how of the Pit Liquor Non-Toxic Deodorant company, let’s get one thing clear. This one thing is….this company kicks butt. Don’t believe me? Check out their risk-free guarantee that comes with purchasing from them:

Our risk-free guarantee on your first bottle puts your mind at ease. Don’t love Pit Liquor? Email us and we’ll work out a return with you. We refuse to be like those other natural deodorant companies that tell you it’s your fault you haven’t detoxed enough or some other load of BO. We’ll want to know how we can improve in the future because we believe all feedback is good feedback. Learn more about our guarantee here.

Haha. Welp, if that didn’t make you giggle a bit then I am not so sure we can be friends anymore. Just kidding. You may just need a good rub of whiskey or rum on your pits to lighten up :).

Meet the Makers of Pit Liquor

Jason and Erica

Saddle up your unicorn and join us for a magical armpit journey!

Pit Liquor Creators Erica and Jason

Erica and Jason are the founders of Pit Liquor and the entire Distilled Bath and Body company (pretty amazing in and of itself!). They are loving parents to a little gal named Eve and some very cool cats named Tolkien and Hobbes (pretty sure we just became best friends by the cat names alone). I could go on and on about how cool these two are but let’s jump into the Pit Liquor goodness; How the he-haw-sally did they get into the armpit business??

As like most of us, Erica and Jason were sick and tired of nasty chemicals sneaking their way into their home. They decided to fix the issue themselves and create a truly non-toxic deodorant that not only works but works well.

Here is the very cool Pit Liquor Invention story straight from them:

The story of Pit Liquor began at a most unusual time: During my pregnancy with Eve. Jason was concerned about the carcinogens in our deodorants and we’d been trying various natural alternatives, but none of them worked. One day, he begged me to stop using toxic deodorant for the baby. So I slapped hand sanitizer on my armpits and headed out the door issuing Jason a challenge to find something that actually worked. When I got home, I didn’t stink. Always the inventor, Jason thought plain old hand sanitizer was a boring (and not entirely non-toxic) solution to the underarm stench, but the hand sanitizer illuminated a new idea: high-proof, drinkable alcohol is less toxic than anything unregulated and potentially made from inedible ingredients. So, obviously, we turned to whiskey to solve our quandary.

Pit Liquor All-Natural and Non-Toxic Ingredients

The majority of you are here for this huge chunk of information, so let’s just go ahead and start with this:

What is in the Pit Liquor Deodorant??
  • Organic Vodka and Whiskey: Overproof liquor which is amazing at killing unwanted microbes.
  • Organic Arrowroot: You will notice this at the bottom of your bottle – so be sure to shake before use. The arrowroot helps to keep the armpits a bit more dry and, above all, it’s anti-microbial! Bacteria is scared of this stuff.
  • Himalayan Salt: Don’t even think about drinking this stuff because it will taste like salt – yuck! The salt is meant to keep the bottle for armpit use only and also aids in dryness.
  • Organic Tea Extracts: Purchased from Happy Lucky’s Tea House and The Golden Poppy Herbal Apothecary in Fort Collins, CO. For the list of tea extracts, click here!
  • Organic Scent Components: Amazing vanilla beans, lavender flowers, and black peppercorns and cloves are used to give the deodorant a fragrance.
  • Essential Oils
  • Organic Extracts of lavender and vanilla from local spice shops in the area.

Plus, you can feel so good knowing that all of the Pit Liquor selection of deodorants are vegan, cruelty-free, toxin-free, gluten-free, aluminum-free, paraben-free, mining-free, baking-soda-free, pesticide-free, triglyceride-free, and above all, stink-free (which is just spectacular). The products are also fair trade!

Sustainable Production of Pit Liquor Deodorant

The folks behind Pit Liquor put a lot of conscious effort into their sustainable practices. When I received my own package of Pit Liquor, I was extremely satisfied with the packaging (all recyclable), the bottles (beautiful glass bottles), and of course the nature of the deodorant itself.

While the bottles can be easily recycled, Pit Liquor would actually like you to return the bottles to them so that they can give you a sweet discount for your next purchase and so that the bottles can have a second life!

Here’s how to Recycle the Used Bottles:
  1. Wait until you have 5 empty bottles.
  2. Give them a quick rinse.
  3. Send them back to Distilled Bath and Body (you will pay the shipping) and get a sweet discount code for your next purchase! Don’t forget to subscribe to the awards program as well!
The Refill Program

Not a fan of shipping back and forth? Looking to reduce your carbon footprint even more? That’s who this program is for! The refill program allows you to buy in bulk and refill at home for up to a year! Genius.

Pit Liquor Coconut Lime with Rum

I decided to pick three deodorants to talk more about in detail, starting with this epic “Summer in a Bottle” coconut rum one. I swear….as soon as I smelled this bottle it was like I was transported back to my summer holidays, pre-kids of course haha. The smell is so amazing.

One extra perk of the pit liquor deodorant ingredient list is that they will not cause any rashes that can sometimes occur with natural deodorants. This is absolutely a rash free deodorant, and my armpits are extremely happy!

Available in:

  • 3.4 oz, lasts 4-6 months
  • 50 ml, lasts 2-3 months
  • 30 ml, lasts 3-4 weeks
  • reFILL, lasts at least a year

Pit Liquor Whiskey Lavender

The Pit Liquor Whiskey Lavender has become my daily go-to bottle. I love applying this in the morning before my yoga session and then getting a whiff when I am in a sweaty downward dog haha – Gosh, I have never spoken so freely about my armpits before and I am loving this blog post lol.

When applied, the whiskey and lavender mesh together so beautifully. Once applied, the alcohol kills the bacteria and I am left with this dry powdery lavender smell. It’s magnificent. I highly recommend trying this one first if you want to take the plunge.

Pit Liquor Whiskey Triple Shot Set

While I love the roll-on, Martin is obsessed with these spray bottles. I am honestly thinking that each one of these can last for like…4 months or more? The website says that you only need to apply every 24-48 hours and Martin is applying around 36-48 hours. He smells amazing! I love him in the whiskey black pepper…super sexy smell on his skin.

Each one of these bottles in 100ml! Snag 3 of them for a bit of a discount.

FYI: The website states that each bottle should last 3-4 months. Woohoo!

I think I am going to finish this post off with a quote from my beloved, Martin. Eh hem…

“Baby, this (pronounced “dis” in his German accent) is the BEST deodorant. I did not smell you once in the car today after yoga – it is a miracle!”

Hahahaha. Oh, my life.

Big Thanks to Pit Liquor!

The folks behind Pit Liquor were kind enough to gift our family a HUGE box of all the goodies from the deodorant selection. We will be set for well over a year and I can promise you all, we will 100% be purchasing another huge box after these are finished (in the recycle program, of course). I am hooked. I have finally found my and Martin’s forever pit spray! If you have any questions, comments, concerns, please just leave them in the comment section or message me directly. As always, thanks for stopping by!

Weighted Blankets by Weighted Evolution

Have you ever heard of weighted blankets?? I was introduced to this phenomenon by a really close friend of mine who co-sleeps just like our family does. We were chatting about the blog and work and I told her how hard it has been the past few months because every time I try to sneak out of the bed to work, I wake up the boys!! Then I’m stuck lying there, staring at the wall until Martin comes home and takes my place in the cuddle zone.

The Tote Project: Fighting Human Trafficking with Each and Every Purchase

**All of our sustainable & zero waste content has moved over to our brand new website: SustainablyKindLiving. Hope to see you there!!**

The Tote Project

When did we allow fashion companies to have the power to destroy our home? Allow them to secretly (and not so secretly) deny basic human rights to our fellow human beings?
.
When did we, as a collective society, go blind?
.
Child slavery, human trafficking, sexual abuse and even death….all for a 5 dollar t-shirt? All so that we could fill our homes with more and more cheap crap.

The Tote Project

When did we forget our values??
When did we forget that we are all equal?
How could we forget that we ALL deserve fair wages, safe working conditions, basic human rights, and the right to work of our own free will?

The Tote Project: Fighting Human Trafficking with Each and Every Purchase

What is Human Trafficking?

According to antislavery.org, Human trafficking involves the recruitment, harboring or transporting people into a situation of exploitation through the use of violence, deception or coercion and forced to work against their will. In other words, trafficking is a process of enslaving people, coercing them into a situation with no way out, and exploiting them.

People can be trafficked for many different forms of exploitation such as forced prostitution, labor, begging, criminality, domestic servitude, marriage, and organ removal.

Contrary to a common misconception, people don’t necessarily have to be transported across borders for trafficking to take place. In fact, transporting or moving the victim doesn’t necessarily define trafficking.

Many people who fall victim to trafficking want to escape poverty, improve their lives, and support their families. Often they get an offer of a well-paid job abroad or in another region. Often they borrow money from their traffickers in advance to pay for arranging the job, travel, and accommodation. When they arrive they find that the work they applied for does not exist, or the conditions are completely different. But it’s too late, their documents are often taken away and they are forced to work until their debt is paid off.

Human Trafficking is a $150 billion dollar industry with well over 20 million victims; 26% of those victims are children.

One of the scariest things about human trafficking is that it happens right in front of our eyes but many of us have no idea what to look for. For a full list of way to sight human trafficking, check out this very educational page.

How Fay Grant and Michelle Chavez Fight Back

the tote project creators

The creators of The Tote Project, Fay and Michelle, have continuously fought back against human trafficking by putting the workers FIRST. They partner up with only those who ensure no slavery exists in the supply chain and DEMAND ethical manufacturing. When businesses put a demand for better working conditions and better treatment of their workers, change DOES happen. When we, as consumers, support those who take these steps to secure a better future, WE are also demanding change!!

To top it all off, these women work with the outstanding organization Freeset Global, which is a fair trade business that offers employment to the survivors of the West Bengal’s sex trade. Through Freeset and The Tote Project, these brave women finally get what they deserve; fair wages, pension plans, occupational therapy, health insurance, and literary and budget lessons.

Every single worker on this planet deserves to be respected, paid fairly and work in a safe environment of their own free will. We must demand this.

The Factories

the tote project factories

If you thought these ladies were done demanding change, just wait until you hear about their sustainability practices!

First off, the factories are in partnership with Oasis bags and are dedicated to empowering women in Kolkata, India. Many of these women go on to become full-time seamstresses and some have even opened up their very own tailoring businesses!

Sustainability practices include fairtrade certified cotton, solar panels, energy-saving LED lights, high promotion of cycling to work (70% of workers cycle!) via interest-free loans from the company, and atriums/ventilators installed for energy savings.

The Products

I have been using my Free to Explore Tote since September of Last year and the Free to Grow Tote and Free to Inspire Pouch since a few months ago. I can, without a doubt, say that these are the BEST totes and pouches that I have ever come across (and I come across a ton of totes in my line of work!).

The totes are LARGE. As most of you know, I bike ride vs drive a car and these totes are my go-to for bulk product buying at the markets and lugging it all back home in the bike stroller. With just my two totes I can carry an entire crate of fruits and veggies (I’m talking a LARGE crate that Martin has trouble walking up the steps haha). These totes will never fail you. They are super thick, super durable and just absolutely gorgeous. I used my free to explore tote for my primary purse until the free to grow one came in and then I switched!

the tote project tote

The pouch is a dream; it holds ALL of my products. Not just my makeup….but my makeup, face wash, lotion, oils, brush, and toothbrush. ALL in one bag. It’s a must-have item for anyone who needs their products in one fits all bag ( like me!). It’s been a big time-saver for camping, travel and just day to day organization.

Giving Back

The Tote Project

Last but not least, The Tote Project donates 10% of all profits to the Two Wings Foundation.

“At Two Wings, our mission is to empower survivors of sex trafficking to identify and pursue their dream vocation through mentoring programs, life skills classes, and career training workshops, creating the path for a life of financial and physical independence. “

I had never heard of this organization until The Tote Project came to our doorstep and I am so thankful for that day for so many reasons. Watching the videos of the survivors of the human trafficking industry really lit a fire under my butt to get to work on spreading awareness. This needs to stop. It MUST stop. We have to take a stand.

We are so honored to have Tote Project Goods grace our home. I am so thankful to have come across this brand through deep research into sustainable living and, of course, so excited to share them with our community today.

**Fay and Michelle were kind enough to gift our family with the following totes and one makeup bag. I cannot even begin to tell you how many uses we have gotten out of these gems. I use them EVERY single day!! Although the items were gifted, the review is all my own and I only ever share items that we cherish in our own home.
