Hold Up….A Capsule Wardrobe for….Kids?!

Hello, loves, and welcome back to the blog! Today we are thrilled to talk all about the amazing and innovative company that is changing the fashion world. One children’s capsule wardrobe bundle at a time.

As you all know, I am such a big supporter of sustainable and ethical brands from my closet to my littles closet, and our family is over the moon about this one. Standing applause for Rent-A-Romper: The Capsule Wardrobe Subscription for Children!

Rent-A-Romper Capsule Wardrobe Subscription for Children

What exactly is a capsule wardrobe?

Let’s break it down to the basics:

Most essential pieces

Functional pieces

Seamless Mixing & Matching

The entire point behind a capsule wardrobe is to have a smarter closet. One that works with you and not against you. A closet that, when you open it, has a bunch of ready to wear outfits that fit your lifestyle (your actual lifestyle – not the one we dream about).

What does this mean for a kids closet? It means a LOT less headaches, a lot less clutter, and a lot more time and money for the important things!

Let’s get educated on Rent-A-Romper!

Rent-A-Romper Capsule Wardrobe Subscription for Children

Goal

Being a Parent is hard work. Why make it harder with all the added stress of shopping to meet our little ones needs? By subscribing to the Rent-A-Romper capsule wardrobe, you will have exactly what you need, when you need it! This capsule subscription grows with your child!

Environmental Benefits

We talk a lot about the negative effects of the fast fashion industry, but sometimes when we think of kids clothing, we tend to not associate fast fashion with it. It’s just so cute, right? You take a stroll through the well known fast fashion shops and you are instinctively drawn to the cute little outfits. No way this little knit sweater could cause any harm. It’s impossible!

Well, the sad truth is: fast fashion is fast fashion. By choosing a children’s capsule wardrobe by Rent-A-Romper, you are avoiding the chaotic back-and-forth conversations in your head. We can avoid the stress, the long lists of things our kids need (or what we think they need), and just get back to the good stuff.

Extra bonus: By limiting the amount of funds sent to the fast fashion industry, you are benefiting your child’s future by forcing these brands to step up. Money speaks so much louder than we could imagine.

Rent-A-Romber Founder: Lauren Gregor

Rent-A-Romper Capsule Wardrobe Subscription for Children

Lauren is all about helping parents. She knows how hard it can be, she is a mom herself! I loved reading her story of how she became an entrepreneur (reminded me of when I started!) and how she finally just jumped all in with a passion to help others. I truly believe there is no greater purpose out there other than to want to help your community. Whether small or large – it is such a great way to live your life and truly find your purpose.

Lauren jumped in, bought the domain, stocked up on clothes, and got to work. And that, my friends, is how dreams come true.

Trust in your self and jump in!

Eco-friendly and Zero Waste School Supplies
30 Eco Friendly & Zero Waste School Supplies

Eco Friendly & Zero Waste School Supplies

Welcome back to the blog everyone! Today we are super excited to have a guest contributor by the name of Alexandria Winner (from Ecoist) to share her advice on eco-friendly & zero waste school supplies. My school days may be over, but I need all the help I can get with my two children heading off to school in the near future! I love the thought of carefully choosing each and every school supply piece, with not only my children in mind, but with mother earth and the future state of our world in mind.

Be part of the solution, not part of the pollution

Eco Friendly & Zero Waste School Supplies

The typical American school uses about 250,000 pieces of paper per year.

This equates to over 35 Billion sheets of paper JUST in the K-12 schools in the United States.

When you add in the school supplies that the children and teens are bringing into their classrooms, these numbers can easily be multiplied by well over 56 million – which is the number of children and teenagers in school this year according to the National Centre for Education Statistics. And this is “just” paper that we are talking about here, folks. Don’t even get me started on the plastic situation. The numbers are staggering and changes need to be made.

If you are looking to fill those school backpacks with responsible, well-made, eco-friendly, and zero waste items, then you have come to the right place!

psst….Short on Time?

Here are the quick links for our list of Eco Friendly & Zero Waste School Supplies:

Eco-Friendly and Zero Waste School Supplies: Pens & Pencils

eco-friendly & zero waste school supplies

Before ordering a bunch of pens and pencils for school, take a look around your house in your drawers and pen cups to see if you have a bunch of old ones lying around. Who doesn’t, right?! Use those first.

Once those are all used up, then choose one of the many eco-friendly options:

  • OHTO/JPT Pencil/Ball Pen
    • Natural Wood Pencil Ball Pen – 1.0mm
  • OHTO/JPT Stainless Steel & Ceramic Roller Ball Pen
    • Stainless steel pen with a ceramic roller ball, 0.5mm

Use what you already have!

After all of our research and digging, I was so shocked by just how many companies are in support of sustainable school supplies. This is such great news!

Like we always say here at WonderMamas, please use what you already have first. Even if you have a drawer full of plastic supplies, I beg you to use those first before buying anything new. If you are on a tight budget and cannot afford the pieces listed above, please check out your local second hand stores, second hand online shops, or even second hand swaps. Join facebook groups in your area for second hand school supplies, yes they exist!

In the end, being a conscious consumer is so much more than buying the latest and greatest eco products. The first step is to evaluate what you got, extend its life, and then replace when necessary. I am so honoured that you have chosen us to help you on this journey. Have a beautiful school year!

Homemade Playdoh with Turmeric

Homemade Playdoh with Turmeric Powder

I first heard about this recipe while researching Waldorf and Montessori ideas for toddlers and then it just seemed to follow me around everywhere. Just a few days ago I had one of my favorite Instagram Zero Waste Gals @PlantedInTheWoods post photos of her making playdoh with beetroot and turmeric powder and I thought to myself…ok…It’s time we do this!!

I do hope you all enjoy this recipe; it was so much fun!

Homemade Turmeric Playdoh

We like to keep our waste low by using things that we already have around the house to play with the playdoh. The boys love to use their knives, forks, and spoons from the kitchen as well as various seeds, dried fruit, rocks, sticks and even feathers from their nature table.

With just 20 minutes set aside (and enough food coloring or powders to go around), you can very well make an entire rainbow of playdoh for your children to enjoy! The dough will last about 3 months if stored properly.

What are the Benefits of Playdoh??

  • Enhances Fine Motor Skills! The constant rolling, squishing, flattening and molding of the playdoh strengthens and develops the child’s hands.
  • Improves Pre-Writing Skills by improving the pincer grip.
  • Imagination and Creativity with the unlimited possibilities that await them!
  • Soothes and Calms the child; Allows for concentration and a new way to express emotions.
  • Hand-Eye Coordination
  • Increases Curiosity; by blending colors and building whatever their heart desires!

Course: how to
Keyword: all natural, homemade playdoh, toxic free, zero waste parenting
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Servings: 1 large ball
Cost: A few dollars

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 1 tbsp citric acid
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tbsp turmeric powder Less or more; depending on the color you want
  • 3/4 cup boiling water

Instructions

  • Start by combining the flour, salt, citric acid, oil and turmeric powder. Mix well and adjust the turmeric powder as needed for your color choice. Feel free to swap the powder out for some food coloring; just use as much as you wish for the color of choice.
  • Once well mixed, add in the 3/4 cup of boiling water. The water will take right to the mixture and seem like not enough but it is perfect; just begin to mix together until dough forms. I like to use my hands in the bowl and then transfer the playdoh to the countertop to knead.
  • Knead and knead until the dough is nice and smooth. Store in a wax wrap or an airtight container to keep. It will last about 3 months if properly taken care of!

Notes

Sustainable and Organic Children’s Clothing by Petit Tembo

Our children’s clothes are 90% second-hand goods passed down from generation to generation, but we do enjoy finding new companies to work with to promote sustainable children’s clothing via organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, and even upcycling of materials.

I am honored to feature Petit Tembo, the gorgeous Canadian brand, in today’s sustainable children’s fashion feature. I cannot speak highly enough of this company and the softness of their fabrics. The boys have hit their #30wears within just a couple of short months!

I am a big believer in the words of Ms. Westwood…

A Parent’s Best Friend: The FREE HowGood Plug-In to Help You Identify Non-Toxic Baby Products and Shop Smarter!

The HowGood Plug-In is Here to Save The Day!

I remember the day my sons were born clear as day. The first scream cracked my entire foundation. The second scream followed about 10 seconds later and my entire world was shattered. A mother of twins was born! Everything that seemed important to me before was hazy and so far in the past. The present moment was all that mattered. This very moment of holding my sons to my chest and providing my breast milk for the first time in my life. It was surreal.

Our Montessori Inspired Toddler Bedroom (Twin Style!)

Welcome back to the blog, loves! Today we are talking about our favorite room in the apartment; the boys Montessori inspired toddler bedroom! This was the room that took me well over 3 months to concentrate on in order to find exactly what the boys needed.

In those 3 months, the house was a bit chaotic and the boys just could NOT wind down. The family room turned into their playroom, my bedroom turned into their jumping room, the kitchen turned into their drumming room and we all needed a break haha. I realized that the one thing missing from our home was a room without distractions; a relaxing room for reading books, rubbing bellies and daydreaming. That is this very room!

The Inspiration

When we moved into our new home, I had plans for every single room except for the boy’s bedroom…I just could not figure out how I wanted to go about decorating. For the first three months, this bedroom was simply two twin mattresses, the boys shared XL crib, a box of toys and cardboard boxes taped to the window to keep the light out. It was horrid haha.

After we completed the living room and kitchen, I knew that this room had to go with the flow of the house; primarily white and green, minimalistic (of course), very natural, and above all, relaxing. I had this crazy idea; what if this room was ONLY for sleeping and relaxing? What if, as crazy as it sounds, I created the most relaxing zone for my twin boys?

And it worked like a charm. An absolute charm.

Montessori Inspired Toddler Beds

I fell in love with the idea of Montessori floor beds during my research to figure out which method I wanted the boys to be educated from; Montessori or Waldorf. We have not yet decided between homeschooling and traditional education or Montessori and Waldorf, but we have decided that we thoroughly love both, from the toys that are played with to the beds that the children sleep in.

Traditionally, Montessori floor beds are used from a very young age (I read a range between 4 months and 1 year). We started our floor bed experience at 14 months and I think it was a wonderful transition for Leo and Alessandro. They had just started to use each other to catapult out of their shared crib, so this was much safer!

The beds were purchased locally but you can find very similar (and even more gorgeous in my opinion) bed options on Etsy:

We found the braided linen bumpers on Etsy. We ordered these specifically for the rolling off of the teepee beds and it worked beautifully! I was able to tie the ends and keep the bumper in place.

For the blanket and sheets, we went ahead and used Martin’s blankets from when he was a teenager (his mother saves it all!) and just had them professionally cleaned. I purchased the duvet covers from Etsy. I opted for linen covers and it was a great choice! Of course, since then we have purchased a few more sheets and blankets: I have come to love the sheets from Little Green Radicals!

The Storage

Montessori Inspired Toddler Bedroom

When we purchased the beds, we also threw in the matching closet that is Montessori inspired as well. It is low enough in height for the children to reach and also to add some free cloth boxes at the bottom for various shirts, pants, and socks. This is another one that would work great!

Here’s a gorgeous bedroom penderie that you may also love:

We had a bit of trouble in the beginning (about 2 days time) with the boys throwing the clothes all around, but with a bit of respectful parenting and proper blocking, they have not mishandled the clothing since!

I snagged two wicker bedside tables from facebook marketplace for quite cheap and use these for onesies, pajamas and extra shirts. I keep their clothing amount as limited as possible for my own sanity as well as theirs. They really enjoy choosing their own clothes and we have lots of fun with it.

Lastly, I used a wooden coat wall hanging to hang their backpacks and heavy jackets. They love to take the backpacks on and off and stuff them with various toys from the living room.

The Decor

I had a bit of a “relax” room in our previous home that had fake vines lining the ceiling. We carefully removed these and wrapped them around the top of the tipi frame. I also hung up a dream catcher that I snagged from Etsy while I lived in Hawaii, laid down a rug from Maison du Monde that was a housewarming gift from my family, and lastly hung up random decor that we had hung up in our old garden.

Here are some look-alike rugs you may like:

We only had my Peace Lily Plants in here for the initial photos. They are safely back in the living room and bathroom where they receive much more sunlight. We have since swapped out for Jade Plants!

The Effects of Montessori Inspired Toddler Bedroom

Montessori Inspired Toddler Bedroom
 Montessori Inspired Toddler Bedroom

My sons are extremely active; they run, jump, sing, scream, wrestle, cuddle, roll, dance and take bites out of every piece of fruit in the house and hide them in random places for me to find later. I created this space for them to wind down and take a breather.

Like I said earlier, it worked like a charm. The boys just turned two and use this space for quiet play (especially when they are a bit upset over a toy being taken by the other or just tired from a long day) and reading. Reading happens primarily in this room and occurs right before naptime or bedtime.

I adore the twin beds because I can fall asleep with them at any time of the day and all three of us are comfortable. Martin joins us a lot in family nap times and we each take one in our arms and cuddle them to sleep.

When the boys are sleeping alone, they simply wake up and open the door and join us in our bed (or wherever we are at the moment) and I believe this sense of freedom has truly opened up a new line of trust and respect between us. I trust them to stay in their bed until they need me, and they trust me to be there for them with just a “Mama” call.

Closing Thoughts

I believe I covered everything in this bedroom. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below!
